London Board goes back to school
LONDON
“First impressions were great,” Roly said. “I arrived as students were working outside, skirting board corners. Inside, they had built room pods from stud work to practice building walls, plastering and tiling, and fitting out bathrooms. Three of the students had just plastered a wall and it wasn’t a bad first attempt. “We have had five students on work experience over the last three weeks and all made contributions and saw real projects in action. We will be looking to take on a student who is a good fit for our company in the new year and I would encourage others to do the same.” If you’d like to take on a Build Academy learner for a work placement please contact London Director Tom Peardon.
The London Board visited learners at the Build Academy, an FMB training provider equipping young people with site-ready skills relevant to work for small building firms. Board member Roly Woodward said: “The Build Academy takes promising young adults and gives them a hands-on introduction to the basic trades in an environment that mirrors a working day on site as opposed to a day in college. “This is designed to address the needs of small building companies by making students work- ready and better qualified to choose the right apprenticeship for them.” The London Board hosted its meeting at Build Academy so board members could see the progress being made by the learners.
Flying the flag for mental health
As small business owners, these strains are often felt by FMB members – and that is what Nik and David brought to the event, sharing the unique perspectives of SME construction companies, while stressing the importance of company and site cultures that encourage openness and support. The summit supported many mental health charities including FMB charity partner The Lighthouse Charity.
London President David Gutierrez and Vice President Nik Nelberg recently attended the ‘Get Construction Talking’ summit in London – which aims to change perceptions around mental health. Many will have heard the statistic that two construction workers take their lives every day. Long hours, work pressure and financial issues all contribute to poor mental health.
