Break Free From Hustle Culture

It’s Hurting You More Than Helping

In recent years, hustle culture has taken over nearly every aspect of our lives. When we hop in the car to drive to work or the grocery store, we often exceed the speed limit and barely even stop at stop signs. When we run errands, we try to rush through them as quickly as possible without ever taking a moment to

a hurry or else we do them poorly. Look at it this way — if you’re going to do something beneficial for your kids, you won’t rush, so why are you hurrying to complete tasks that could benefit you?

stop and smell the roses. Hustle culture might be most apparent in the workplace, causing many to wonder if this ideology is helping or harming us.

How do you know if the hurry culture is having a negative effect on you? John Mark Comer determined that there were 10 symptoms of hurry sickness: irritability, hypersensitivity, restlessness,

Not long ago, my small group at church started reading the book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer. It was a good book, but I didn’t give it a lot of additional thought at the time. It wasn’t until I read “To Hell With the Hustle” by Jefferson Bethke that I truly realized how important the message in these books is. Both books address the hustle culture prevalent in our society, and they explain it’s not as beneficial as many believe it to be.

workaholism, emotional numbness, out-of- order priorities, lack of care for your body, escapist behaviors, slippage of spiritual disciplines, and isolation. If you’re feeling these symptoms, don’t panic. Comer also provides four practices to break free from the hurry lifestyle. It starts with taking time for silence and servitude. Then Comer recommends taking one day off each week where you do absolutely no work. After that commitment, you focus on simplifying your life and slowing down.

“To Hell With the Hustle” hits you hard in the prologue with some eye-opening statistics that help readers understand the harm that comes with hustle culture. According to the book, 7 in 10 millennials are experiencing burnout, 54% of millennials say they are chronically lonely and nobody knows them well, and 30% of millennials and Gen Z struggle with disruptive anxiety and depression. It seems as though everything in our culture is about speed, and it’s having a negative effect on the younger generations. Once I read these books and thought about their message, I realized that, from a business perspective, hurry and hustle never really accomplish anything beneficial. We like to get things done as quickly as possible, but we really can’t complete the important things in a rush. There are things that are important and non-urgent and things that are unimportant and urgent. We tend to spend too much time on the urgent things in life without spending enough time on the more important, big-picture things. In “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” Stephen Covey tells us that we can’t do the essential things in life in

After reading these books, I’m trying to slow down and break free from the hustle culture. I’ve been trying to slow down while driving, but I can’t believe how

difficult it is to drive at the speed limit. I’m also making time to sit outside on my back porch, enjoying the scenery and solitude without distractions. These books have ignited a new thought process in my mind, and it’s allowing me to try to slow down and enjoy every experience — to try to stay in the moment. I’m still a major work in progress, but I’m getting there. Speed is great at times, but we live in a constant state of rushing that is taking away from our overall enjoyment of life. If you can, try to take some time to slow down and enjoy everything that comes your way. If you need more help slowing down, I highly recommend reading “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” and “To Hell With the Hustle.”

HEALTHY JOINTS MATTER SAFEGUARD YOUR MOVEMENT FOR YEARS TO COME Our knees, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and hips are integral parts of our bodies — all joints connecting our bones. After years of pressure plus wear and tear on our joints, they risk wearing down and developing conditions such as osteoarthritis, a common degenerative joint disease seen in older adults. However, aging isn’t the only thing that can adversely affect our joints. Sometimes, overuse of a particular joint can cause pain, discomfort, and eventually limited mobility.

TO KEEP YOUR BUSINESS FULLY COVERED In last month’s newsletter, we discussed the rising rates of property insurance and explored how some businesses are underinsured due to inaccurate property values. If an incident occurred at one of these businesses and the owner had to rely on their insurance coverage, they could be in for a rude awakening. This is an experience that every business owner wants to avoid, and they can as long as they’re regularly reevaluating their property value and staying up to date on their valuation. Experts recommend reevaluating your property value at least once a year. It might seem too often, but doing so is the best way to ensure your insurance coverage fits your business. Construction and rebuilding costs are constantly changing, which is why it’s so important to get your property reevaluated regularly. Another essential step for getting accurate coverage is working with your underwriter so they know exactly how your business operates and any risks involved. That way, they can provide sufficient coverage to protect you and your property in the event of a loss. Another important factor to consider is your risk management strategy. The insurers want to see that you’re protecting your assets to the best of your ability instead of relying solely on their coverage to save you in the event of a disaster or loss. The stronger your risk management strategy, the more affordable and inclusive your coverage will be. Finally, some insurers have started using artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure they’re correctly valuing properties. They don’t let the AI run on its own, though. A team of underwriters works alongside it to ensure everything is accurate. The AI can often find holes in the coverage and provide additional assistance to ensure you’re fully covered. Experts predict that property insurance rates will continue to rise, so staying up to date on your valuations will become even more critical. Your business can remain protected if you stay on top of the game and regularly evaluate your property.

Here are four tips to incorporate into your daily routine to keep your joints healthy, lubricated, and mobile.

Sit up straight. Did you know your posture plays a significant role in the health of your joints, even your knees? Standing and sitting up straight helps reduce unnecessary pressure on any part of your body and protects your back, hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. It also helps to prevent injury to the surrounding muscles. Maintain a healthy weight. If you allow your body to become overweight, you inevitably slow down and move less. The extra weight also places more strain and pressure on your joints, mainly your knees, ankles, and hips, increasing your risk of joint damage and complications. Get moving . Staying active and building strong muscles and bones provides the stability and support your joints need to thrive. Dynamic stretching and low-impact exercises

strengthen your joints and keep them in optimal shape. Remember, the more you move, the easier it becomes. Practice safety first. When performing activities that may place more demand on your joints, rely on padding and protection. For example, wear knee and wrist pads if you go roller skating or ice skating! If your wrist is sore or injured, a brace will protect it and provide the support it needs to heal. Even if you’re gardening outside and kneeling often, be sure to kneel on a soft pad or area to safeguard your knees. Protection is always key! Maintaining a safe and active lifestyle is the key to keeping your joints healthy for years come. Take care of your joints now so they

Want to Live Longer?

YOU NEED TO STAY ACTIVE

The study’s authors believe most people only have a fundamental understanding of how genes work. With the growing popularity of genetic testing services like 23andMe, many people have an increased focus on their genetic makeup, believing it plays more of a role in our lives than it does. Don’t focus on your genes if you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Instead, take some time to get up and move every single day. Go for a walk around the neighborhood, play a round of golf, join a sports organization, or find some other way to move each day consistently. Even making choices as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator can go a long way toward improving your physical health. While genes do play a role in your development and, to some extent, your health, it’s clear that a physically active lifestyle will give you the best chance for a long and healthy life. So, get up and move a little more; it’s great for you!

We’ve all heard someone blame their bad genes for a particular illness or health condition, but what if our genes weren’t the primary driving factor behind our overall health? Of course, we’re more susceptible to some health issues because our parents or another relative had the same condition, but that’s not the case for all health problems. A recent study from Human Kinetics found that the amount of physical activity we partake in has a more significant impact on our lifespan and overall health than our genetic makeup. In the study, researchers surveyed over 5,400 older women and divided them into three groups based on their genetic risk factors. They continually checked in on the women for several years, observing their lifestyle habits. After observing the women for over six years, researchers concluded that older women who participated in more physical activity had a lower risk of early death. Conversely, the women who remained primarily inactive had a higher chance of mortality. Their genetic makeup had virtually no effect on their mortality risk.

Build Loyalty With Storytelling Marketing Tell a Story and Gain a Following

How can storytelling benefit you?

We all love stories. Be it books, movies, or current events, we can’t help but thrive on storytelling in our everyday lives. We even process information better when it’s told as a narrative. A study by psychologist Jerome Bruner discovered that people were 22 times more likely to remember a fact when embedded in a story. That makes storytelling a powerful tool to reach your audience. Storytelling marketing is when brands use a narrative to convey their message. In our era, consumers require more than a basic display of your product. Consumers are searching for why they should trust — and buy from — you. The best way to do this is to utilize storytelling marketing. Not only will it help customers better understand your business, but it also humanizes your company.

might struggle with your story

Businesses worldwide have been reaping the benefits of storytelling, and it has worked well enough to become the new standard. Whether you’re sharing why you started your business or adapting stories that align with your company’s beliefs, storytelling marketing can:

and what you should share. Consider what motivated you to start your business. Entrepreneurship

isn’t for the faint of heart, and there must be various reasons for this endeavor’s importance to you. List all the events and ideas that led you here. Next, design your anecdotal story to align with the ideals of your desired audience. Instead of sharing your story, you could create a tale with powerful metaphors and a lively narrative to draw in your audience. Whatever approach you take, storytelling marketing will ensure you leave a greater impression.
