VOP Employee Handbook

Holidays Immediately upon employment, employees are eligible for holidays, based on the number of hours and days they are regularly scheduled to work.

The holidays observed by the VOP are:

New Year’s Day

Veteran’s Day Thanksgiving Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Good Friday Memorial Day

Friday following Thanksgiving Day

Christmas Eve Christmas Day

July 4th

Labor Day

Day after Christmas

Part-time employees receive holiday pay if the holiday falls on a regularly scheduled workday. The number of hours paid for the holiday equals those of a regular workday. Schedules cannot be modified to receive pay for the holiday. In general, when a recognized holiday occurs on a weekend, departments that operate Monday through Friday will observe a Saturday holiday on Friday and a Sunday holiday on Monday. To be eligible for holiday pay, employees must work the last scheduled shift prior to and following a holiday unless on an approved leave such as vacation, comp time, sick leave, etc. Police, Fire, and Telecommunications personnel are compensated in one check for all holiday time in the previous 12 months during which they were actively employed. This check is generated on or around the first of December each year. Should a shift employee (i.e. Police, Fire, Telecommunications personnel) voluntarily terminate their employment or transfer to a non-shift position during the year, the holiday pay is pro-rated to the date of separation or transfer and is paid in the next pay period. On call, seasonal and reserve employees do not receive holiday pay. Shared Vacation Leave Employees may donate accrued and unused vacation hours to another employee who is off work due to a medical or personal emergency, has exhausted all paid leave, and is not deemed to have abused sick time during their employment with the VOP. This policy is designed as a financial aid to employees and cannot be used to alter any other available leave or right of reinstatement. Contact the Human Resources Department, your supervisor or Department Director for assistance. Refer to the Shared Vacation Leave Policy for additional details. Time Off to Vote Employees are encouraged to vote before or after work. However, requests for time off with pay to vote on Election Day (general, state, municipal) may be granted by your department director if you will not have sufficient time to vote before or after your scheduled shift and if your absence will not result in a disruption of services in your department. Request for voting time should be made at least one day in advance of Election Day to allow the department director to arrange for adequate staffing.
