VOP Employee Handbook

SECTION 8: RISK MANAGEMENT & SAFETY, WORKERS’ COMPENSATION Safety is the responsibility of both the Village and employees. The Village establishes policies, procedures, and training programs to ensure employees are informed and have a safe work environment. Employees are responsible for following these policies and attending safety training programs. Risk Management/Safety Risk management means identifying and preventing events which cause or could cause injury, loss or damage. It involves preventing problems and taking action to solve any that do occur. Each employee has a responsibility to help keep the workplace safe for everyone. Your role in risk management is to: • Learn about the facility safety and security programs. • Know the safety rules that apply to your job. • Memorize fire safety evacuation routes if you work inside a building. • Be alert for any hazards that could harm citizens, visitors, or other staff. This includes physical hazards (such as a slippery floor or frayed wire), malfunctioning equipment and unsafe practices by other employees. • Promptly report any hazards you find to your supervisor or the Safety Officer. • Prevent loss and damage by protecting your personal belongings and not bringing valuable items to the workplace. Employee Injury Reports From time-to-time employee injuries may occur during normal operations or when safety violations occur. Such injuries are to be reported to the employee’s supervisor and documented on an injury report. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Director within 24 hours of the incident, who in turn provides details of the incident to the VOP’s workers’ compensation insurance carrier. Workers’ Compensation Insurance To provide for payment of your medical expenses and for partial income replacement in the event of an approved work-related accident or illness, you are covered by workers’ compensation insurance. The amount of benefits payable and the duration of payment depend on the nature of your injury or illness and upon applicable law. In general, however, all appropriate medical expenses incurred in connection with an injury or illness are paid in full, and partial income replacement is provided after the applicable elimination period by the workers’ compensation insurance carrier. Time away from work due to a work-related injury or illness counts toward the 12-week family/medical leave (FMLA) period. Refer to the Family and Medical Leave Policy for additional details.
