Safety footwear must be worn in the shops, warehouses, maintenance areas and field sites where hazardous work is being performed. Safety footwear must have impact, puncture, and compression protection. All footwear must comply with the following: ASTM F2412-05 (Standard Test Methods for Footwear Protection) and ASTM F2413-05 (Standard Specification for Performance Requirements for Protective Footwear) New employees who do not have safety shoes or boots on the first day of work will be provided adequate protection, such as toe caps, through five working days. Employees who are required to wear safety footwear will not be allowed to work if they do not have proper safety footwear. Employees who cannot wear safety footwear for medical reasons must contact Human Resources prior to starting work. Refer to the Safety Footwear Allowance Policy for information on reimbursement for safety footwear. 7. REFLECTIVE VESTS (TYPEII) to increase worker visibility while working in or around traffic lanes. Village employees are required to wear reflective vests or jackets whenever they are working in the roadway, areas which are in the immediate vicinity of traffic, or in construction areas identified by the supervision as being danger areas. (OSHA and NCDOT Standards provide the basis and intent for wearing of safety vests). 8. Selection of hand protection must comply with OSHA regulation 1910.138 -HAND PROTECTION. The use of PPE will be mandatory as a condition of employment when PPE has been deemed a necessary element of any job duty. EMPLOYEES AND SUPERVISORS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT USING PPE APPROPRIATELY. PPE must stay in an approved location. Do not take home at the end of the day. An employee who may disagree with certain safety practices should not refuse to perform their duties, but rather ask for a review of the safety practices in question. The employee may request a review of the practice by the Safety Committee and/or the Risk Manager if the employee continues to disagree with the departmental review of the safety practice in question.
