The Dean College Honors Program presents a rigorous interdisciplinary approach to the learning experience. The program provides academically talented and motivated students an opportunity to participate in stimulating and challenging courses, seminars and colloquia during their time at Dean College. Exciting cultural and co-curricular activities outside of the traditional classroom environment supplement and enhance the learning experience. Students enter the Honors Program at Dean via several pathways. Many Honors students are invited into the program during the admissions process and may start their Dean experience taking Honors courses. Once at Dean, students will continue to be invited based on scholastic achievement and faculty-staff recommendations. Students may also apply to join the program at any time during their Dean careers.
The Honors Program at Dean was one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience. The program transforms ordinary courses into unique, in-depth studies of the chosen topic. I highly recommend that all students strive to take part in this fantastic program.

HONORS COURSES Through the Honors courses, students explore subject matter more deeply and further develop their critical thinking and communication skills. Honors courses develop students’ skills as analytical thinkers and writers and offer opportunities for networking and camaraderie. Honors courses are offered across the curriculum allowing students in all majors to participate in the Honors Program. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY HONORS COLLOQUIUM This unique seminar is presented through the perspective of multiple disciplines, enabling students to discover the relationship between content and context. Recent offerings have included The Story & Self, Death & Dying, The Value of Art, The Evolution of Nike and Black Lit Matters, to name a few. CULTURAL AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The cultural and co-curricular activities component supplements the classroom experience and underscores Dean’s liberal arts– based philosophy. Activities include field trips to local sites in New England, theatre “talk backs,” guest speakers in class and more. Honors students find myriad ways to express and share their learning; they give on- campus presentations as well as creating new media products such as podcasts, blogs and vlogs. Each year, students have the option to join the Honors-sponsored International Study Tour; destinations have included Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, and more.
HONORS DISTINCTIONS Students in the Honors Program have two opportunities to earn special distinction: Sophomore Honors Distinction is awarded to bachelor’s degree students who complete at least six Honors courses and earn a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA in their first two years. Honors Scholar is awarded at graduation to bachelor’s degree students who complete at least nine Honors courses—three of which must be upper-division courses—and earn a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA.
STUDENTS ENJOYING A TRIP TO MOROCCO
The Honors Program-sponsored Study Abroad class was one of the most extraordinary events of my college experience. We had the opportunity to study our choice of art, history, music and literature from different origins in the world before having the ability to travel to those places, enhancing the educational experience.
