The PAYE: expat starter checklist is available here

The forms that are to be used up until 5 April 2021 will be removed in due course, and in order to clearly highlight the ‘old’ and ‘new’ versions, the checklists have been marked “for use up to 5 April 2021” for tax year 2020-21 and “for use from 6 April 2021” for tax year 2021-22.

Both the starter checklist for PAYE and the PAYE: expat starter checklist have been updated to include information relating to the new Scottish student loan plan type four, which will be implemented from 6 April 2021.

The online service for the VAT Deferral New Payment Scheme is open 26 February 2021

HMRC announced on 23 February 2021 that the online VAT Deferral New Payment Scheme was open for over half a million businesses to join, who opted to defer VAT payments last year.

Businesses are required to opt-in to the VAT Deferral New Payment Scheme and are able to do so through the online service that opened earlier this week and closes on 21 June 2021. In order to benefit from the new payment scheme, businesses will have had to deferred VAT payments between March and June 2020, under the VAT Payment Deferral Scheme. Those who did will be able to pay their deferred VAT in equal consecutive monthly instalments, from March 2021. Payments can be spread from between two and 11 equal monthly instalments, which will be interest free. Payments can commence from March 2021, and businesses are being encouraged to opt-in sooner rather than later so that more instalments are available to them, which could help them to spread the cost.

Businesses that are eligible, but unable to use the online service, can contact the HMRC Coronavirus Helpline on 0900 024 1222 to join the scheme.

There is further information relating to what businesses must do prior to opting-in available online, but some of the key steps for businesses include:

• Creating their own Government Gateway account (if they don’t already have one) • Submitting any outstanding VAT returns from the last four years (if they don’t do this, then they won’t be able to join the scheme) • Correcting errors on their VAT returns as soon as possible • Ensuring they know how much they owe, inclusive of the amount they originally deferred, and how much they have already paid

The Chief Executive of HMRC, Jim Harra has taken to LinkedIn to confirm that, even in his position, he has recently been on the receiving end of a scam call. As a result of this, and because of the increase in the number of scam calls of late more generally, HMRC is doing all that it can to alert people to these scams.

Any suspicious HMRC contact should be reported, and this can be done online, via a form.
