The current rate of Government-support stands at 80% of employees’ usual wages for any normal hours not worked, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. Employers are required to fund the employer National Insurance (NI) and minimum employer Auto-Enrolment (AE) contributions for any hours that are spent on furlough and must also pay staff for any hours that they do work, plus the associated employer contributions.
We would like to thank you in advance for completing the CIPP’s latest Quick Poll.

Quick Poll results: 56% of employers claiming under the CJRS paying at Government-funded level 23 February 2021 The CIPP’s latest Quick Poll explored how businesses that have been submitting claims, and receiving payments, through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) have been paying staff. Have they been paying employees at the Government-funded amount, or have they chosen to top up that pay? The responses reveal that the majority (56%) of employers are paying staff that are on furlough at the Government- funded amount, which currently sits at 80% of an employee’s standard salary for any of the usual hours that they do not work. This is capped at a maximum of £2,500 per month. This level of support will be offered until the end of April 2021, when the scheme is currently intended to close.
This means that 44% of businesses are opting to top up the pay made to staff, which is not mandatory, and must be funded by the employer.
CIPP comment
Ahead of the Budget on 3 March 2021, speculation is rife that the CJRS is due to be extended until the Summer, due to ongoing lockdown measures that will remain in place to combat the spread of coronavirus. We wait to see what Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak confirms, and, if there is an extension, what the level of Government support will be, and when the scheme will finally close. New Quick Poll: Have employees who are working from home moved abroad? 23 February 2021
As the outbreak of coronavirus has prompted a move towards working from home for many, The CIPP’s Policy and Research team wanted to gauge if any employees have opted to move abroad, to work remotely and, perhaps, for example, have moved back to their home country. We have, therefore, published a new Quick Poll on our News Online page to ask that very question. We appreciate that payroll professionals are especially busy at the moment, preparing for tax year end, and grappling with coronavirus measures, but we would be really thankful of any time you take to respond, and the Quick Poll should take less than a minute to answer.
It is particularly important that employers monitor situations where their staff are working and / or living abroad as it could have implications on how they are paid.
Thank you in advance for getting involved with the latest Quick Poll, and for feeding into payroll research.
