Follow the Trends

P urchasing a recreational vehicle is a big investment that takes research and consideration. It’s important to know what your needs are, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned RVer looking to replace a current unit. When shopping, consider the most prevalent trends. When investing in a new motorhome or trailer, consider all the angles

is the primary reason people are trend- ing toward four-season-ready RVs. That “wherever” can mean dry camping in a primitive location or skiing at a moun- tain resort. Cochran points out that even if you’re parked in a lot watching a kids’ soccer game for the weekend, having a four-season rig at your dis- posal means no lapse in comfort. WEIGHT AND TOWABILITY If you’re looking to purchase a trail- er, but not necessarily a heavy-duty vehicle for towing service, then light- weight trailers have probably caught your attention. Manufacturers have responded to buyers looking to use half-ton pickups and smaller SUVs as primary tow vehicles by trimming the fat on everything from toy haulers and fifth wheels to travel trailers and pick- up campers. Lightweight trailers are designed with modern materials, and every square inch of the interior and exterior is maximized for functionality. With gas prices in a constant state of flux, it’s no surprise that the light- weight trend is one of the fastest grow- ing segments in the industry right now. While some RVers might be concerned that lightweight units may require compromises in space, livability or both, the industry is becoming increas- ingly skilled at delivering desirable attributes without unnecessary weight. At a recent RV show, one manufacturer displayed a full-featured 32-foot fifth

OUTDOOR LIVABILITY Enjoying the outdoors without sac- rificing indoor luxuries is the best of both worlds. Whether you use your rig for tailgating, entertaining or tour- ing, chances are you’ve had your eye on units equipped with an outdoor kitchen and entertainment facilities featuring big-screen TVs and audio systems tied to exterior speakers. With kitchens outside the RV, being part of the conversation while preparing meals is feasible, while at the same time keeping strong food smells like salmon and bacon out of your galley. So, consider your needs: Do you want an exterior kitchen, so the chef never misses out on the fun? Or just an entertainment center to watch movies or listen to music while enjoying the great outdoors? Or the full package with an exterior kitchen, entertainment center and additional outlets for extras? Fortunately, the RV industry is quick to respond to customer needs, and today’s RVs provide a variety of outdoor entertainment options. Most manu- facturers offer some kind of outdoor kitchen now, whether it’s something as simple as a two-burner range and fridge or a full mini-kitchen that adds a sink, counter space and one or more draw-

ers that emerge from a side compart- ment when needed. Many even have a small gas grill mounted to an exterior arm for more al fresco opportunities. Entertainment ranges from small wall- mounted TVs to full home-theater sys- tems that stow in an exterior compart- ment. The choice is yours. FOUR-SEASON FUNCTIONALITY Whether you’re looking to live in an RV full time or simply to have the flexibility to travel when you want, equipping an RV for the elements is essential. It’s a misconception that all RVs are designed to be used anywhere, anytime. Donald Cochran, director of sales at Northwood Manufacturing, suggests checking to see if the holding tanks are enclosed andmaking sure the valves are enclosed and protected from the ele- ments. He further recommends check- ing that all holes and spaces between pipes and electrical cords are enclosed and insulated to protect against harsh conditions. “Thermopane windows can add an extra degree of insulation,” Cochran adds. While saving energy, the insulation can keep cool air inside the RV in the summer and the cold air out in the winter. Wanting to go wherever, whenever
