so that;' looking through, we shali see t-He things that are eternal. —Amy Carmichael. 28. , .The Commander of Creation “And he arose, and rebuked the wind” (Mk. 4:39). God is not quite so helpless as some people would have us believe. I like that story of Jesus rebuking the wind and producing an immediate calm. It seems such a natural picture of deity. Skeptics can believe that God is a help less prisoner in His ' own universe if they like, but I for one must believe that the Creator is greater than His creation.—A London Journalist. 29. The Spirit’s Purpose “When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, 'even the Spirit of truth, which pro- ceedeth from the Father, he shall tes tify of me” (John 15:26). God will not find water for us to use for turrflng our own mill wheels. He ■vyill do nothing to- minister to our pride. He will not give us the Holy Spirit to enable us to gain celebrity, or to pro cure a name, or to live an easy, self- controlled life. . . . His one passion is the glory of the LOrd Jesus, and He can make His abode, only with those who are willing to be at one with Him in this.—F. B. Meyer. 30. Our Unityin Practice “ Speak' every man truth with his neighbor; for we are members one of another” (Eph. 4:25). Shall I seek to wrong one who is a member of ine and I of him? In doing this, we practically deny the great truth of unity—our oneness with Christ and every member of His body. God has constituted this unity a great per manent fact which I can neither make nor unmake. It is. divine and eternal, and our practical behavior is in the Scripture based upon what God has made a great reality.—J. R. Caldwell. 31. Peace for All the .Morrows “Thou crownest the year with thy goodness” (Psa. 65:11). Has the year brought sadness ? Joy is yet in store; Has it given gladness? Next year giveth more. Let your Father measure All your pain and care, Let Him weigh the burden That your heart must bear, Sending light or shadow As He deemeth best, For in His sure wisdom You can safely rest., Peace for all the morrows, Strength for all the days, - These shall be your portion Through the new year’s ways. —Annie Johnson Flint
the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God” (Heb. 10:5-7). What an hour that was when the Son of God rose up and, coming into the wprld, said these words!: We are sure that all heaven was stirred, and the attention of every crea ture in those realms above was con centrated upon that great event, but who shall tell what it meant to God? His holy will, His glory, the vindica tion of His character, the revelation of His love were all committed to His be loved Son—the Babe in Bethlehem. —J. T. Mawson. . “Made Flesh” “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). He Was not flesh when the first fay of light shone, when the first bird sang, . . . when the first fire burned, when the first river flowed, when the, first rose opened wide its rubied heart,' when the first wind blew, when the .first lily bared its white bosom—“for by him were all things created.” B u t' "he was made flesh”—and every nerve was divine handwriting, every muscle was a pulley divinely swung. —Robert G. Lee* 26. The Greatest Miracle “Many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did” (John 2:23). Each discourse, each miracle, nay each word and act, is a fresh ray of glory streaming forth from the Person of the Word through the veil of Hi? flesh. The incarnation is the one great wonder; other miracles follow as a mat ter of course. The real marvel would be if the Incarnate Being should work no miracles; as it is, they are the nat ural results of His presence among men, rather than its higher manifesta tion.—Selected. 27. Walking By Faith “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7). I see not a step before me, as I tread the days of the year, But the past is still in God’s keeping, the future His mercy shall clear; And what looks dark in the distance may brighten as I draw near. So I go on not knowing. I would not if I might; I would rather walk in the dark with God than go alone in the light; I would rather walk with Him by faith than walk alone by sight.—Selected. We need to pray that the things that are seen shall be- transparent like the pavement of heaven for clearness, - Reprinted from Cuivary by 'special /per mission ~ of Zondetvan Fab.,: House, Grand Rapids, Mich, 25.
