BUILD IT. PROTECT IT. PRESERVE IT.
When I was little, Sunday afternoons, right after church, were set aside for dinner at my grandparents’ house, and it was one of my favorite times of the week. We would get home from church, I would immediately change from my church clothes into my play clothes, and I would prepare my stomach to take on some of the best home cooking of all time. October is National Cookbook Month, and that observance got me reflecting not only on all the good food I was fortunate enough to receive from my family when I was growing up, but also on who in the family is responsible for the cooking and how that has changed for my family. Sunday dinner at Grandma Brown’s was really something to behold. Every week, we were treated to a feast of fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread, and plenty of other dishes that would leave your mouth watering until you could finally sink your teeth into them. I remember Grandma had this cast iron skillet that she would use to fry up the chicken, and it somehow made it taste unlike any other fried chicken recipe out there. I still don’t know what she did to make that chicken so good, and I doubt I’ll ever know for sure. But if you didn’t leave Grandma Brown’s house stuffed, you were doing something wrong. AN APPRECIATION OF HOME-COOKED MEALS, PAST AND PRESENT WHO WEARS THE CHEF’S HAT AROUND OUR HOUSE
Between Grandma Brown cooking for us on Sundays and my mom cooking for us during the week, I never once saw my dad or my grandpa prepare a meal for us. Like a lot of families from those generations, the women of the family did all the cooking. I never saw my grandpa stand over a stove frying chicken, and I never saw my dad pull a hot baking sheet out of the oven. It just didn’t happen. When my wife and I first got married, neither of us had much cooking experience. We ate out a lot, but that was an expensive habit to keep up, and truthfully nothing beats a good home-cooked meal done right. So, we started cooking more and cooking together. Today, both of us help prepare meals for ourselves and our daughter. I usually cook some sort of meat as the main dish, and my wife handles the sides. One of my favorite things to cook is grilled chicken that’s marinated in Italian dressing for two days. Even at just 3 years old, my daughter knows how tasty that chicken is. Not too long ago, I had a piping hot plate of it sitting out on the counter, and she just came along and grabbed a wing right off the plate before I could warn her that it was hot! Cooking is about a lot more than just making good food — although that is certainly an important part of it! I’m glad for my role in helping prepare meals, if only for my daughter’s sake. While I might have grown up looking forward to a lot of good food, she’ll get that and more. It’s my hope that by helping cook meals, my daughter can see what a good partner I am and what a good man is supposed to do to help around the house. Then, one day, when she meets someone special, they’ll have a high standard to live up to!

WHAT’S NEWWITH ME AND MY OWN?
We're celebrating Jeff’s four-year anniversary with Littlejohn Law! Jeff and I have handled countless complex real estate cases together. He is truly an asset to the team. One of Jeff’s favorite litigation moments was a case in which an opposing counsel thought he caught us sleeping and that we were going to miss an important deadline. True to Jeff’s nature, he had prepared an excellent brief and filed on the deadline when it was due. The opposing counsel responded via email: “Excellence Comes Standard Baby!” And that’s when Jeff knew we had them right where we wanted them.
