WILL NORTHWOOD

I watched the monochrome colours on the screen’s skin touch and rub over each other.

‘Chiaroscuro’ focuses on a wealthy white man in America during the 1920s who finds himself attracted to a black woman against his own will; this is considered immoral at the time and subsequently he suffers for it. My story also explores how the introduction of film influenced Modernist writers: the first public screening in 1895, followed by the first film to use sound in 1927, influenced literature by encouraging the use of devices such as perspective shift. This cinematographic style is a core element of my narrative explored by way of time shift, close-up, and the use of synecdoche related to colour, in particular the colour of skin.
