PERCY PRESTON

I was not going to be forced into submission by a few drops of water.

‘Inundation’ is the internal monologue of an anonymous narrator, whose emotional stability is threatened by camping in intense weather conditions. The story explores water as a metaphorical device representative of the narrator’s failure to account for his own emotional well-being. The use of pathetic fallacy builds up a sense of the narrator’s paranoia: by suggesting that natural conditions are capable of being unforgiving, the narrator discloses his own delusional state. The use of a dramatic monologue, in which an (un)reliable protagonist relays his thoughts, was inspired by the writings of Murakami; however, this story lacks Murakami’s anti-capitalist, political agenda.
