“I trust you’ve all had a restful weekend? I know I most certainly have. Jones, do sit down. Books ready.Today, we are going to look at ourselves as human beings, and, in particular, to explore our deeper potential. Our subject, fiction, can help to illuminate our understanding of the human condition.” “Humans are the most intelligent, rational beings on the planet, so why is it that we are culpable for a large proportion of the world’s suffering? We have committed the most heinous crimes, and shown no remorse, even revelling in the process. Of course, class, these thoughts are not applicable to the vast majority of people. Most of us go through life keeping in line with rules put before us, never overstepping the boundaries.However, I am here to put forward the notion that writers have scratched the surface for us, have delved deeper, and shown us just what we are capable of, for better or worse. As the most intelligent form of life, we can do real good. Likewise, we have a not-so-altruistic side. We all in some way harbour a dark passenger: our more instinctive, primal need. We have to master this.
