JOSHUAVALLANCE

The hunt had begun.

The use of fairytale imagery throughout ‘The Country Mouse’ helps to establish the context of a remote picturesque Norman landscape, however the introduction of aggressive verbs in jarring patterns gives the narrative a darker edge. Symbolism is used throughout to create a threatening air that prefigures the story’s end: the references to the “bottomless sleep” into which the young man falls, and the “blackened” and “lifeless” trees, are death symbols which contribute to the creation of menace. The narrative itself is a metaphor for the brutal seizing of female virginity as the manly pursuit of the hunt results in the destruction of a young girl.
