MICHAELYIAPANIS

He would sleep peacefully tonight.

In ‘Back In Time For Christmas’, dual themes of repression and control converge to create an image of dystopia, in which a modern society has degraded into a controlled state. Whereas Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four depicts a disturbingly futuristic setting, I chose a contemporary scene in order to amplify the modern reader’s response. The doctor himself appears to be a grim reaper incarnate, exuding no hint of vitality, and the metaphor, ‘the weakening eye of day finally closed its lids’, removes any doubt for the reader as to the dark fate of the protagonist who has left the frightening, surreal world of the story forever.
