VISIONARY TRAINERS TRANSFORMING HOSPITALITY Why Attend a Competency MasterClass? Ripples Create Major Waves!

By Ashley Helkenn, Director of Training, Bonchon

After a perfect whirlwind of the CHART Seattle conference, filled with learning, fun, and networking, I was ready to learn even more. So, I signed up for the Trainer Track Competency MasterClass with facilitators Patrick Yearout and Serah Morrissey. Truth be told, I was a bit nervous. Giving a seven-minute presentation to a group of my peers?! And then voluntarily standing there while they gave me feedback? Immediately, Serah and Patrick put

Tips and Tricks I Implemented the Following Week Decided our next Book Club read will be the 6 Types of Working Genius to follow up on our continuing conversations about what work gives us energy Took the grid from the presentation to help us assign projects differently Moved away from a presentation into a round-table style discussion for our very next meeting Added a morning huddle to talk about our mindset and to get each other in the right headspace (allowing us to really meet each other where we are and provide support when needed) Added snacks to our franchise meeting that fit our brand better Increased our energy level when giving presentations

the entire class at ease, and created a safe space for us. With a small class, it was the perfect size to take the time to present, give and receive feedback, and connect as a group. I learned as much from the presentation styles of the other participants as I did from the feedback I received. Everyone was so graceful and helpful in their feedback, and VERY quick to point out the good.

10/10 HIGHLY Recommend

After an amazing conference and some late nights in the hospitality suite, it’s easy to want to sleep in or fly out. I would highly recommend powering through for a Competency MasterClass! There is no better way to cap off a CHART conference than learning from others, growing your own skills, and being personally coached by legends of CHART.

High 5 is Moving to the Winter Conference! After 10 years of the Training High 5 being a part of the summer conference, we’re moving it to the winter conference to give these practical gems even more play. The winners will submit a brief video presentation of their ideas to open up the recognition for those who aren’t able to join us in-person at the conference. Do you have a brilliant idea, simple solution, or blinding flash of the obvious you want to share? Submit your idea by January 15, and if selected, it will be featured at the Charlotte conference in March. 2023 CHART Year in Review: Reflecting on our accomplishments together

PresidenTalks Learning is the Only Future-proof Skill

I feel fortunate to be in a profession in which I know we are doing something very special, helping people learn, develop, grow, and achieve their professional and personal goals. It’s pretty cool that you can align making a difference in the lives of others with business objectives (this is my kind of Venn diagram!). As I reflect on the past year and gear up for the next, I’m very aware that we’re not immune to an environment (and industry) that is rapidly changing. The good news for us is that learning is the only future-proof skill. As we create learning objectives with each module, program, LTO launch, and so on, I recognize that we should also

be including an objective on teaching our teams to adapt. Our ability to rethink and reshape our approach is something that will always be valuable. Continuous learning fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Individuals who actively engage in learning are better equipped to analyze complex situations, make informed decisions, and adapt to unforeseen challenges. We’ve seen over the last few years how quickly certain skills can become obsolete. As we transition to a skills-based approach within our organizations, individuals who embrace continuous learning are better equipped to adapt and remain relevant. Continuous learners are more likely to acquire the skills needed for emerging career opportunities, making them more marketable.

As we’re part of the hospitality industry, one thing that successful management team members possess is the know-how to be versatile with constant unique challenges. By teaching our teams how to adapt, we can encourage learning across various disciplines to help individuals develop a broader skill set, enabling them to tackle complex problems from multiple angles. In a world characterized by change and uncertainty, let’s help our teams prioritize learning and teach them how to be agile and adaptable. For me personally, CHART provides the resources to stay on the cutting edge of L&D in the hospitality industry. Best Wishes,

Meet Your Charlotte Conference Team These volunteers are working hard to craft OUR Charlotte conference experience. To get to know THEM a bit better, we asked them “What in your career never seemed like a possibility, that actually came to be?”

Facilities Co-Director Keith Strew VP of Learning & Organizational Development, Puttshack “The training department earning a seat at the table that would allow for investments into our people. The change in the perception of the department from being a gate keeper to being a gate agent of learning.”

Facilities Co-Director Audrey Benet

Director of Training, Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar “I never thought it possible that I would travel the world and meet individuals of different cultures while working. It has been the highlight of my career (so far).”

First Time Attendee Co-Director Serah Morrissey Senior Director, People Resources, Schoox

Volunteer Co-Director Nadine Willems Director, Momax Trainings & More

“It never entered my realm of dreams that my words would be published in a magazine. Thanks to CHART, I had several opportunities to write for Hotel Management magazine. It was a highlight of my career!”

“In my career, the idea of venturing beyond my comfort zone never seemed like a possibility. I thrived in the stability of a 16-year tenure within a company, working alongside my brother until the pivotal decision to sell the business. The prospect of such a drastic change was, at the time, the most frightening experience I had encountered professionally. However, looking back over 8+ years since that momentous decision, I can confidently say it has been the best move I've ever made. Embracing the unknown, despite my initial reservations, has opened doors to new opportunities, growth, and a deeper understanding of my professional capabilities. This unexpected journey has proven that sometimes the most transformative experiences lie just beyond the borders of our comfort zones.”

First Time Attendee Co-Director Anna Mason

Director of People Experience, A.Ray Hospitality “I was in operations for 15 years, working my way from Host to General Manager. I always loved training and helping my team find those lightbulb moments, but I didn’t know how to make a career change. My company at the time did an internal search for a new member of the training department, and I took a leap and applied. I never thought I’d get the role, but I DID! It has changed my entire career trajectory in the best way possible.”
