HOW NEW HOBBIES CAN ENHANCE YOUR WELL-BEING Don’t Let Winter Hold You Back!
While it might be the season for New Year’s resolutions and even National Hobby Month, the weather here in Cleveland isn’t encouraging. We don’t need any flashbacks to polar vortexes when temperatures dropped below zero. With our subpar weather, you can feel less motivated to get active or start fresh. Fortunately, winter is the perfect time to stay indoors and find new hobbies to accommodate the freezing weather. It’s crucial we do anything to help us get the most enjoyment out of winter life and life in general! Since I turned 50 in 2023, I’ve had plenty of thoughts on how to make the next 50 years as active and fulfilling as possible. It might sound like a lofty goal, but I’m determined to stay healthy and be here for my loved ones. My daughter is currently on track to get her doctorate in physical therapy, and in her journey, she met a patient who has a passion for longevity and health. He is a writer and gave her one of his books, “The Great Age Reboot.” The book was eye-opening, showing you how you can make it to 100 years old and surpass it! I highly recommend this book to anyone, no matter what age. You’ll get older no matter what! One thing that continues to ring true is the idea that our minds need to be continuously engaged as we age. This is where starting new hobbies can impact your well-being perhaps more than you imagine. Of course, the issue might not be starting new habits and hobbies, but sticking with them. I’ve discovered over the years that you need goals that run deep and have meaning to stick with them. One powerful motivator is that I want to be there for my grandkids! While it might not

to read. I can pursue my intellectual endeavors that are not necessarily work or dental-related. I’ll read fiction, historical nonfiction, and almost anything I don’t usually read! I hope you can find a goal or hobby that fits your drive and life vision this year. We all need something to be excited about with a clear “why” motivator. Pick something and give it a whirl! There’s nothing wrong with changing hobbies that don’t work for you and starting over. Find something that helps you get out of bed. You never know what it may be until you give it a try! -Dr. Jason Schermer
You might think, “Well, maybe I’ll start when winter is over,” but there’s no need to wait. Bundle up for a scenic winter stroll, head to a gym where you can stay indoors, or even do at- home workouts that need just your body weight alone. You have options! All you need is a quick YouTube search to get started, and by spring, you’ll emerge from your cocoon healthy and ready to tackle anything. Of course, not every resolution and change has to be just physical. Winter is my favorite time to tackle the books I’ve accumulated that I still need

Essential Steps in Preventing Gum Disease
FROM GINGIVITIS TO PERIODONTITIS
Almost half of all adults ages 30 and over have some form of gum disease, specifically 46%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common oral health condition affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, so what better time to understand what it is and how to prevent it? Gum disease usually begins with gingivitis, which is characterized by inflamed and bleeding gums. Without proper treatment, it can progress to periodontitis, causing more severe damage, including gum recession and tooth loss. COMMON CAUSES AND SIGNS The leading cause is the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, on teeth. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, and a weakened immune system can all contribute to
the development of gum disease. When keeping an eye out for the signs of gum disease, look for swollen, red gums, persistent bad breath, and loose teeth. Fortunately, preventing gum disease isn’t difficult! HOW YOU CAN PREVENT GUM DISEASE Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, good oral hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle can all help prevent and manage gum disease. A consistent oral care routine significantly reduces the risk of developing gingivitis and more severe forms of periodontal disease. Brushing teeth along the gumline at least twice daily helps remove plaque, the primary culprit behind gum disease. Flossing daily is equally crucial to reaching between teeth and removing plaque from areas a toothbrush might miss.

COMMON DENTAL MYTHS DEBUNKED SORTING FACTS FROM FICTION
Smiles are contagious, and so are the stories we hear about dental care. Let’s unravel six common dental myths that might be causing you unnecessary worry or misleading your dental care habits. “MORE SUGAR, MORE CAVITIES” Sugar is the dental villain we’ve all heard about, but it’s not the sole culprit of cavities. It’s more about how often you munch on sugary treats than the quantity. So, enjoy that occasional sweet treat, but don’t forget to brush afterward. “HARDER BRUSHING MEANS CLEANER TEETH” Do you think vigorous brushing equals a cleaner mouth? Think again! Gentle brushing for two minutes is the secret to cleaner teeth and healthy gums. Too
much force can wear down enamel and irritate gums. Let your toothbrush do the work, not your muscles.
“ONLY SUGAR CAUSES CAVITIES” As stated, while sugar does play a role, it’s not the lone troublemaker. Starchy foods can also team up with bacteria to create enamel-damaging acid. So, don’t just watch out for the sweet stuff; keep an eye on your carbs, too. “NO PAIN, NO PROBLEM” Don’t let the absence of pain fool you into thinking everything’s perfectly fine. Dental issues can lurk without a hint of discomfort. Regular check-ups help catch problems early, preventing pain and saving you from more extensive treatments. “TEETH WHITENING RUINS ENAMEL” Are you worried that whitening your teeth will strip them of their natural armor? When done correctly with a professional, teeth whitening is safe and won’t harm your enamel. It’s a fantastic way to brighten your smile without sacrificing dental health. “CHEWING GUM IS BAD FOR YOUR TEETH” Chewing gum, especially sugar-free, can be a dental superhero. It stimulates saliva production, helping to wash away bacteria and neutralize acid. Just opt for the sugar-free variety for the best results. In the world of dental misconceptions, knowledge is the key to a truly healthy smile. Keep up those fantastic oral habits, and remember, we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
