Scrutton Bland Winter Adviser 2019

Are there any processes which have stayed the same? “Interestingly there are still a small number of our agricultural clients who still prefer to have their weather forecasts sent to them by fax. I think it’s because they like to have a piece of paper to refer to, rather than having to log on to a smartphone or tablet.” Are you able to make long term meteorological predictions? “Our business model is to provide forecasts for up to a month in advance. Sometimes this can stretch to a seasonal forecast but after that it becomes more difficult to be precise – and it is by giving very accurate weather information that we can help our clients save money and run their businesses more efficiently. Using meteorological data proficiently may help a business to make a decision which can reduce risks, and save time and money. It may not be the only factor that they have to bear in mind when they make their strategic plans, but it is often an important one.”

We have to ask: is there any truth in folk sayings like ‘red sky at night’ ? “Funnily enough there is some validity to that one. If the clouds are red in the morning (shepherd’s warning) it is because of the way that the sun is shining on the clouds as they approach, and this usually means there is the potential for rain. In the evening (shepherd’s delight) the red sky will often mean that a weather system is clearing away leading to more settled conditions on the way. Many of the other sayings will have come about because of what has happened, rather than what is going to happen. So, for example, the belief that an abundance of berries in the autumn means that there’s going to be a harsh winter isn’t necessarily true: there are lots of berries because it’s been a good summer – and it may or may not mean we’re in for a hard winter.”
