Healthcare is about people who selflessly and heroically deliver it in the face of adversity with compassion.

Message from Chris

October was incredible! We actively worked together to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. The CDC informs us that Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Our Jacobi and NCB teams coordinated various events to educate our patients and community about the symptoms and risk factors of the disease while advocating for regular mammograms for early detection and intervention. I’m proud of your commitment to quality, person-centered care.

We also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month! Acknowledging the contributions of our Hispanic Leaders in Healthcare.

I’m grateful for the support from our external stakeholders, who align themselves with our mission to provide access to advanced healthcare for residents in the Bronx communities we serve. Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson hosted a special press event for Bronx Public Health facilities, during which she awarded NCB and Jacobi a check for $2 million each. These funds will go towards upgrading our facilities’ magnetic resonance imaging systems to support early and efficient diagnoses for our patients. We value her partnership. Also, in October, we hosted a press conference for NYC Council Member Marjorie Velázquez, who was joined by NYC Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams, and NYC Council Member Rafael Salamanca during which they presented Jacobi with a check for $6 million. NYC Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, and NYC Assembly Member John Zaccaro, Jr. were also present to express their support. These allocated funds will go towards Pediatrics, Dental, Cath Lab, MRI Upgrades, and Bi-Plane Camera to advance the quality of care we provide for our patients daily. Additionally, we resumed our CAB meetings, and we are thankful to the Bronx Borough President, Vanessa L. Gibson, for appointing reputable new members to join our board to serve as community advocates for our facilities and Bronx residents in the communities we serve. We are thankful to all our CAB members who volunteer their time and efforts. Furthermore, congratulations to our Behavioral Health team! The long-awaited renovated Adult Mental Health Outpatient Treatment Practice was open to the public. This newly renovated space marks the first step of integrating behavior health with Jacobi’s primary care services.

Lastly, thank you all for participating in the 2023 Employee Feedback Survey! Your voice matters, and we value your time and opinions.

A lot is happening in the world around us. Express kindness to yourself and others. I am proud to work alongside all of you every day.

I’m encouraging you to get a flu shot! Stay safe and healthy.

Chris Mastromano

THE EARLIER YOU DETECT BREAST CANCER, THE MORE TREATMENT OPTIONS YOU HAVE. Every October, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women are reminded to take care of their breast health. Early detection of breast cancer saves lives, it’s just that simple. The sooner the cancer is found and treated, the greater the chances of a full recovery. Women in the earlier stages of the disease also have more treatment options available than ever before. Treatment options for early-stage breast cancer depend on the woman and the situation. The first choice most women have to make with their doctor is whether to have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. During a lumpectomy or breast conservation therapy, the surgeon removes the cancerous tissue and some of the surrounding normal tissue. This can be done on an outpatient basis but may require several weeks of radiation after surgery. The breast’s resulting appearance depends on the amount of tissue removed. A mastectomy removes more of the breast tissue – sometimes the entire breast, sometimes the breast, and the lymph nodes under the arm. Both types of mastectomies cause little breast pain, but lymph node removal may cause uncomfortable swelling around the arms. In breast cancer’s early stages, lumpectomies and mastectomies have the same survival rate. This leaves many women wondering why anyone would choose a mastectomy – the more invasive option. However, some women are not good candidates for a lumpectomy, while others don’t have time to undergo the daily radiation treatments required by lumpectomies. Talk to your doctor about all your options. Make sure to write down your questions and don’t be afraid to request a second opinion.

HEALTHCARE ERGONOMICS

Brian C. Garrett CHSP, CHEP, CHFSP, FLSD Associate Director of Health Care Standards, Safety Management

WHAT IS ERGONOMICS? Simply put, ergonomics is the study of fitting a job to a person – Not a person to the job. The goal is to prevent injuries in the workplace. Some effects of poor ergonomics include joint swelling, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve inflammation, muscle strain/sprain, lower back pain, tendon problems, and eye strain. Hospital employees tasked with handling and transferring patients are especially exposed to injuries such as muscle and ligament strain and tears, joint, and tendon inflammation, pinched nerves, herniated discs, and other injuries from ergonomic stressors. Properly understanding and implementing proper ergonomics can lessen sick days and create a safer environment.

THERE ARE SEVERAL RISK FACTORS THAT CAN LEAD TO THESE PROBLEMS.

Properly understanding and implementing proper ergonomics can lessen sick days and create a safer environment. There are several risk factors that can lead to these problems. 1.

Poor and awkward postures can hinder the back and other muscles involved in movements. If you are leaning over too much, try working in different positions without bending or twisting. Repetitive motions, doing the same job over and over, can cause strain to the muscles being worked for a particular job. Force and effort used for a task can cause harm to the body. For example, lifting a patient improperly could lead to a Musculoskeletal Disorder. Contact stress from leaning against an item or carrying objects – such as carrying a heavy box on your shoulder that is leaning against your neck. This can cause an unnecessary injury. Vibration from certain tools can injure the hands, wrists, and joints if one doesn’t utilize a proper technique or take breaks. Low-temperature environments add pain to the joints and other parts of the body so it’s important to dress appropriately for particular jobs.

ERGONOMIC LIFTING Plan your lift before starting the action. Is it too heavy for one person? Position your body close to the object being lifted – feet shoulder-width apart. Bend at your knees using a squatting motion. Use your legs to lift while keeping the item close to your body. While handling patients, utilize proper assist devices and equipment whenever possible e.g. mechanical lift equipment, shower chairs, sliding boards, gait belts with handles, wheelchairs, repositioning devices, etc. CHARTING/OFFICE WORKSTATION Sitting at a computer while charting or doing other work can be a strain factor on your back, wrists, fingers, feet, eyes, and other body parts. Implementing ergonomics in healthcare can help here as well. 1. Utilize the chair’s armrests while sitting to prevent the chair from moving. Sit as far back in the chair as you can. 2. Maintain good posture – Ears, shoulders, and hips should line up vertically using the chair support. 3. Keep the computer monitor between eye level and a 30-degree downward position. 4. Elbows should bend at about a 90-degree angle when using the mouse and keyboard. 5. Be aware of the edge of the desk or other sharp objects poking into your body. 6. Keep your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and feet supported on the floor. 7. Be sure to have an adjustable chair. PUSHING/PULLING TECHNIQUES When moving carts or other items, try to be aware of some ergonomics training guidelines: 1. Using two hands when possible is better than using one. 2. Heavy items should be easy to reach – as well as items that are often used. 3. Maintain a balance of loads. 4. Pushing is easier than pulling. 5. Push at waist level – pull at thigh level. Recognizing Musculoskeletal Disorder symptoms, reducing risk factors and taking precautionary measures will get you on a path to better health.

COMMUNITY LIBRARY NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS/JACOBI|NORTH CENTRAL BRONX CELEBRATES NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NORWOOD COMMUNITY LIBRARY To further its efforts to help patients live their best and healthiest lives, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and North Central Bronx (NCB) announced today that it would be opening a library mailbox on its NCB campus with local nonprofit, the Norwood Community Library. The Library, which was established in 2018, attempts to fill the literacy void that exists in many Bronx neighborhoods which are left without bookstores or ways to easily access reading material. The Norwood Community Library was started by Brandon Montes, 32, a lifelong Bronxite who identified the gaps in available literature throughout the Borough since Barnes & Noble shut its doors in 2016. The project, which initially started outside of a local bodega, has developed into a library mailbox located at 3400 Reservoir Oval East and a robust tabling operation led by Brandon and his volunteers. NCB will be the second permanent physical mailbox location. Montes already has a strong history with NCB. He was born at the facility in 1991 and his mother, Bella Bernundez, worked as a clerical worker in the clinics department in the 1990s.

Those looking to access the new Norwood Community Library Branch can find it at NCB on the first floor of the hospital, in the lobby near the entrance.
