Banesco International was originated in Venezuela in 1986 with the creation of Escotet Casa de Bolsa. It began its activity in the Venezuelan banking sector in 1991 through the acquisition of Grupo Bancentro, later called Grupo Banesco.
The internationalization process began with the establishment of operations in Panama and Puerto Rico, during 1992 and 1993, and continues to date.
In 2006, Banesco USA was founded, and in 2019 acquired Brickell Bank. Expansion continues in America with the opening in Dominican Republic in 2011 and the purchase of SFA Bank in Curaçao (now Banesco N.V.) in 2013.

The operations began in Europe 2013 with the acquisition of Banco Etcheverría . In 2014 ABANCA Holding* acquires ABANCA (formerly NCG Banco) and absorbs Banco Etcheverría.
ABANCA completes the acquisitions of
Deutsche Bank PCC Portugal and Banco Caixa Geral are integrated into ABANCA.
ABANCA Insurance forms an alliance with Crédit Agricole Assurances.
ABANCA acquires Bankoa, SA.
ABANCA sign the deal with Crédit Mutuel and adquires Targobank
ABANCA acquires the Novo Banco network in Spain.
