2024 Rumble Ponies Guide Mets to 2025 Spring Breakout Victory
By Matt Levine
The New York Mets’ top prospects defeated the Washington Nationals’ top prospects, 5-1, in the 2025 Spring Breakout game during Spring Training on March 16 at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Mets’ squad was led by five players who suited up for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2024 in first baseman Ryan Clifford, shortstop Jett Williams, catcher Kevin Parada, and right-handed pitchers Jonah Tong and Jonathan Pintaro. Clifford, who ranks as the Mets’ No. 4 prospect (all rankings via MLB Pipeline), belted a two-run home run to straightaway-center in the fifth inning, which put New York up 5-0. Clifford was selected to the All-Spring Breakout First Team by MLB Pipeline. Clifford crushed 18 home runs for Binghamton last season, which ranked third in the Eastern League. The Mets received strong outings from Tong and Pintaro on the mound in the Spring Breakout game. Tong started for New York and spun two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Pintaro earned the win and tossed two scoreless innings with one punchout. Tong enters the 2025 season as the Mets’ No. 6 prospect. He finished the 2024 season with Binghamton and threw six no-hit innings with nine strikeouts in his Double-A debut on September 5. Pintaro currently ranks as the Mets’ No. 24 prospect. Pintaro began the 2024 season pitching in the Pioneer League and eventually reached Triple-A Syracuse, after signing with the Mets on June 3. Williams, the Mets’ No. 2 prospect and MLB’s No. 57 overall prospect, recorded a walk, stolen base, and run scored in the Spring Breakout game. Williams was the 2023 Mets Minor League Player of the Year and spent parts of the last two seasons with Binghamton. Parada started behind the plate for the Mets in the Spring Breakout game and went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The 2022 first-round pick spent the entire 2024 season with the Rumble Ponies. The Mets improved to 2-0 against the Nationals in the annual Spring Breakout game that began at Spring Training in 2024. Spring Breakout is a four-day event that highlights the future of baseball with games between the best prospects in each farm system across Grapefruit League and Cactus League ballparks.
Other notable performances: OF Carson Benge (Mets No. 3, MLB No. 100): 1-for-2, 2B, BB INF Boston Baro (Mets No. 14): 2-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 R OF Nick Morabito (Mets No. 18): 2-for-3, 2 RBI, SB
