2024 Player Spotlight: Brandon Sproat BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – When Brandon Sproat joined the Mets Double-A Affiliate, the Bingham - ton Rumble Ponies, on May 13, he started his Double-A career with three strong starts. In his Double-A debut on May 15 against Bowie, he allowed only three hits over five scoreless innings. Over his next two starts, he went seven innings and did not allow more than three runs. The Sproat start that electrified the baseball world though, provided Mets fans with boundless excitement, and put him on the national map was on June 2, a Sunday evening 5:05 p.m. start against the Harrisburg Senators, the Washington Nationals Double-A Affil - iate. On a hazy, overcast evening in Binghamton, Sproat allowed just one hit over seven scoreless frames, issuing just one walk and striking out a career-high 10 batters.
Right from the get-go, Sproat was in com- mand, striking out Robert Hassell III and JT Ar- ruda on 100 mile per hour (mph) and 101 mph fastballs. Sproat then went to a 91 mph chan- geup to strike Andrew Pinckney out swinging. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander would go on to strikeout the first five batters he faced, as he began the second getting Dylan Crews and Brady House swinging on dastardly changeups. The 23-year-old Sproat would go on to retire the first 11 batters he faced; the only baserun -
ner allowed was via a Pinckney single with two outs in the fourth. Sproat, now the Mets #5 prospect on MLB Pipeline and 95th in all of baseball, faced only one batter over the mini- mum over seven innings. Adding to the excitement of the start was that Sproat was throwing to Mets catcher Fran- cisco Alvarez, who was with Binghamton on a rehab stint. “It’s definitely super cool to throw to a big-league veteran, kind of pick his brain on how he thinks and how he works”, Sproat said. “Definitely super cool and super fun to throw to him.”
When I spoke with Sproat the Tuesday after that Sunday masterpiece, he spoke mat- ter-of-factly about how he was feeling. “I mean I knew the ball was coming out good, [but] I didn’t think it was coming out that well, it’s not the first time I’ve been up in triple-digits, so it was no surprise there.”
At the same time, he has a very humble approach to each outing. He talked about “controlling what I can control; I can’t con - trol strikeouts, I can’t control what they do with the ball, I just stick with my approach. The way I look at it is ‘hey this is your only

Time is Flying
When Sproat and Crews, the #4 prospect in all of base- ball, last faced off it was in Game One of the 2023 Col- lege World Series Finals in Omaha. Sproat started that game for the University of Florida and Crews was on the powerhouse and eventual-national champion He was previously drafted by the Mets in the third round of the 2022 draft, but elected to return to Gainesville. Sproat gave his permission to be selected again by the Mets in ’23 with the 56th overall pick.
Since then, Sproat’s stock has skyrocketed. In the Spring Breakout game, which pinned the Mets top prospects against the Nationals top prospects, Sproat pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning on six pitches, all strikes, includ- ing two strikeouts while reaching 99 mph. With High-A Brooklyn, Sproat pitched to just a 1.07 ERA over six ap- pearances (five starts). Over his first nine starts with Binghamton, he went 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA. Sproat’s biggest accomplishment to date was his selection on July 2 to the MLB All-Star Futures Game, an annual matchup of the game’s top prospects at the site of MLB’s Mid- summer Classic. Sproat shined on July 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, pitching a scoreless bottom of the third inning in which he faced the minimum, with his fastball again being clocked as high as 99 mph. After the game, Sproat had certainly left an impression on the other Futures Game stars on the field. According to Newsday, Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Meyer said after the game “you definitely remember when you face a guy like that. He’s got electric stuff. He’s got that unique balance of throwing so hard and having such great secondary pitches. That’s literal- ly what makes a great pitcher.” On the day Sproat’s selection was announced, Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns was visiting Binghamton. In an interview for our pregame show, Stearns said “it’s a
tremendous credit to him and the work that he’s put in to move through our system at an incredibly rapid rate, to continue to develop and hone his craft, and he deserves that recognition so we’re really happy for him.”
Sproat’s Mindset In my first conversation with Sproat just a few days after he arrived in Double-A, he brought up unsolicited how he has worked with a mental coach since college to improve how he handled adversity on the mound. In catching up with him the day before he left for the Futures Game, Sproat reflected on

2024 Player Spotlight: Brandon Sproat
“It’s definitely been a big roller-coaster, looking back a couple of years ago where I was really struggling mentally with my game, to where I’m at now, it’s night and day…it’s defi - nitely skyrocketed”, Sproat said. “I’m super happy and proud of myself not because of go- ing to the game, but mainly just how far I’ve come with my game and mainly my mental side.”
In talking with Sproat a few weeks after the Future’s Game appearance, he said the experience was “a lot of fun” and he enjoyed meeting new players and catching up with old friends. Interestingly, he said he didn’t have his normal set of nerves because of all the pregame obligations he had surrounding the game. Once he got the call from the bullpen to enter the game before the bottom of the third inning, he said he experi- enced a “huge wave of emotions.”
“I had to just do what I do and accept those feelings and run with them…take this nervousness and excitement with me and just run with it”, he said. He even described his legs feeling like “Jell-O” as he made the run from the bullpen on to the field ahead of his appearance. Twelve pitches later, eight of them for strikes in that dominant frame against the best young talent baseball has to offer, it was clear Sproat’s unique mental clarity is a big part of his success.
Family
Sproat was also excited to see his family in Arlington, as his dad John, mother Carolyn, and younger sisters Brooke and Bailey all were in attendance. When he found out he was selected to the Futures Game, the first call he made was to his parents. Sproat says his earliest memory of baseball was playing catch with his father in the back- yard and that it “really helped him fall in love with the game.” While Brandon didn’t have a specific team he grew up rooting for, he says about his dad “seeing how much he enjoyed the game made me want to enjoy it that much as well.” John was his first baseball coach and Brandon said that “no matter how big the stadium is I always somehow find him in the stands.” He said he normally sees him behind home plate or off to the side pacing back and forth and confirmed after the game that he spot - ted him in Arlington as well.
Gator Bred
As Sproat makes his ascent in the Mets system, another right-hander out of the Univer- sity of Florida has already made it to “The Show” this season in Christian Scott. The two overlapped as college teammates in 2020 and 2021. Both are Florida natives as well, with Scott from the southeast portion of the state and Sproat growing up in Pace, Florida, in the panhandle.

2024 Player Spotlight: Brandon Sproat “He’s a great dude, watching him on TV now is crazy to think about [after playing with him just a few years ago]…just watching him and seeing the growth that he’s made is tremen- dous, I couldn’t be more happy for him.” Sproat also speaks with great respect about Scott’s commitment and work ethic to getting to where he is now.
“It’s never a loss, it’s always a lesson”
While there haven’t been many low points to Sproat’s professional tenure so far, he has an interesting perspective on overcoming tough outings. “It’s never a loss it’s always a les- son”, Sproat said When I followed up on what the biggest lesson he has taken from this year, he said it’s “be where my feet are, it’s my first year in pro ball and it’s really flown by.” The lesson the rest of the Eastern League has learned, and all of baseball for that matter, is that Sproat is a force to be reckoned with. One who is resilient, mentally tough, talent- ed, and is just starting to make his mark.
Finishing Touches
Since this article was first published during the season in “Mets Magazine”, Sproat’s acco - lades have continued to accumulate. The 24-year-old finished his Binghamton tenure 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over 11 starts. He had a strikeout to walk ratio of 77-to-15, averaged 11.12 strikeouts per nine innings, with opponents hitting .181 against him over 62.1 innings pitched with the Rumble Ponies. This was Sproat’s first season pitching pro - fessionally.
Sproat’s last start with the Rumble Ponies before being pro- moted to Triple-A Syracuse was a historic one. On August 2 vs. New Hampshire, the 24-year-old struck out 11 consecutive batters to end his outing, surpassing the MLB record of 10. Sproat was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week following that performance. After the season, Sproat was named both the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year and Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Sproat enters this year as MLB Pipeline’s #1 overall prospect in the Mets system.

Binghamton Franchise History
While professional baseball in Binghamton, NY dates back to 1877, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ story begins in 1992. It was that year that the New York Mets organiza- tion moved their Double-A affiliate, the Bills, from Williamsport, Pennsylvania approxi - mately 125 miles northeast to Binghamton, New York.
The team was renamed the Binghamton Mets and welcomed with open arms by a city that had suffered 23 years without a professional baseball team to call their own. When tick- ets went on sale for the inaugural season, thousands of fans braved the rain and waited in a line that snaked for blocks through the city.”
Fans brave the rain for Binghamton Mets tickets in 1992.
Binghamton Municipal Stadium was constructed in nine months for $4.6 million and hosted its first B-Mets game on April 19, 1992 after three- straight postponed games. Binghamton’s house-warming party was a strong one as they defeated the Harrisburg Senators 1-0 in front of 5,126 fans.” “Led by Eastern League Manager of the Year, Steve Swisher, the B-Mets treated their fans to a stellar inaugural season. They went 79-59, finished 2nd in the Eastern League, and earned a trip to the postseason. The B-Mets dispatched the Harrisburg Senators in the semi-finals in four games, winning a 14-inning marathon to clinch the series. Trailing the Canton-Akron Indians 2-1 in the Eastern League Championship Series, the B-Mets rallied to take Game 4 and earned their first title with a 5-2 win in the deci - sive fifth game. Bobby J. Jones, the staff ace and Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, earned the win in the championship game.
In their first season, the B-Mets welcomed 278,492 fans to Municipal Stadium, the highest single-season attendance for any team to ever call Binghamton home. The record stands to this day.
During the winter after the 1993 season, a group of local businessmen teamed up to make the Binghamton Mets a truly local product. Mike & Chris Urda, George Scherer and David & William Maines purchased the team from the New York Mets in January 1994 . The 1994 season was another banner year for the B-Mets and the city. Binghamton became the center of the Double-A universe on July 11, 1994 when the team hosted the Double-A Association All-Star Game. 6,524 fans packed into Municipal Stadium and watched the American League defeat the National League 10-4. The All-Star Game would not be the only excitement Binghamton would see that sea- son. B-Mets celebrate 1992 title with Binghamton Mayor Juanita Crabb

Binghamton Franchise History The B-Mets won the North Division under John Tamargo with a wire-to-wire perfor- mance, finishing the year at 82-59. The B-Mets deftly swept the New Haven Ravens in three games in the North Division Championship, with each game decided by a single run. Binghamton faced the Harrisburg Senators in the Eastern League Championship. After the B-Mets dropped the series opener, ace Bill Pulsipher got the team back on track in a big way in Game 2 on Sep-tember 2. The hulking left-hander baffled the Senators for nine innings, hurling the first no-hitter in Binghamton Mets history. His win tied the series. In Game 3, the B-Mets trailed by two in the ninth, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a game-tying two- run homer before Frank Jacobs belted a walk-off solo shot. In Game 4, Chris Roberts se- cured Binghamton’s second championship in three years, twirling a complete game in front of 5,259 fans at Municipal Stadium.
In 1996, with Chris Saunders racking up a franchise-record 105 RBI, the team went 76-66 and made the postseason. Unlike 1992 and 1994, this club was not able to supply the magic in the postseason falling to the Portland Sea Dogs in the North Division Championship series. Binghamton punched their ticket to the playoffs in 1998, 2000 and 2004, but made first-round exits each time.

In 2001, the naming rights for the stadium were sold to the New York State Electric and Gas Company. The franchise would call NYSEG Stadium home from 2001 through 2020. In 2021, the Rumble Ponies announced a groundbreaking nam- ing rights agreement with Mirabito. The stadium is now called Mirabito Stadium. After a nine-year postseason drought, the B-Mets compiled one of their best seasons in franchise history in 2013. The club racked up a record 86 wins with Eastern League Most Valuable Player Allan Dykstra and Manager of the Year Pedro Lopez. The B-Mets won their first regular season division title since 2000, but were swept in the first round of the play - offs by the Trenton Thunder. In 2014, the B-Mets made amends and finished second in the Eastern Division with 83 victories. Binghamton trailed the Portland Sea Dogs by four runs in Game 1 of the Division Championship Series before mounting a memorable comeback. After tying the game with three runs in the eighth inning, TJ Rivera belted a walk-off three-run homer in the ninth, capping a personal four-hit game. Binghamton dropped the next two games before re- covering with victories on the road in Games 4 & 5, sealing their first playoff series victory in 20 years. 2014 Eastern League Champion- ship Series

Binghamton Franchise History
The B-Mets continued their roll by beating the Rich mond Flying Squirrels in the first two games of the Eastern League Championship Series in Virginia. In Game 3, B-Mets starter Steven Matz carried a no-hitter into the eighth in front of 5,904 at NYSEG Stadium. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Jayce Boyd ripped a walk-off double into the right- field alley, giving the B-Mets their first Eastern League Cham-pionship in two decades. In 2015, Lopez navigated the B-Mets to a 77-64 record and secured a postseason berth for the third straight year, a franchise record. The team’s all-time winningest manager was inducted into Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine in September 2015, but his club was swept in the Division Series by Reading. In December 2015, John Hughes acquired full ownership of the franchise from Mike Urda. The new president made it clear that professional baseball would be played in Binghamton for years to come. On November 3, 2016, the new Rumble Ponies identity of the team was unveiled at Benja- min Franklin Elementary School in Binghamton. The name reflects Binghamton’s standing as the “Carousel Capital of the World.”
Nearly a century ago, local businessman and philanthropist George F. Johnson commissioned and funded the construction of six carousels to be enjoyed free-of-charge by the public through- out the Binghamton area. Almost 100 years later, these cherished artifacts continue to be used and beloved by the community.
Riding the momentum of a new name and image, in addition to several improvements to Mirabito Stadium, the Rumble Ponies embarked on their first season with vigor in 2017. The team welcomed more than 190,000 fans over the course of the season. The Rumble Ponies teamed up with their fans in a “#BingItHome” social media campaign in the summer of 2017 to convince the Eastern League to award Binghamton the rights to host the 2020 Eastern League All-Star Game. In 2018, the Rumble Ponies welcomed Tim Tebow to the Southern Tier. The former NFL quarterback added to his legend, launching a homer in his first plate appearance en route to being named Mid-season All-Star later that season. On November, 22 2021 David and Karen “KJ” Sobotka of New York based Southpaw Reources LLC, assumed ownership of the Rumble Ponies from Hughes. In addition, former Bingham- ton Mayor Richard C. David and the Rumble Ponies announced a 23-year lease extension keeping the Ponies in the Southern Tier for decades to come. The Rumble Ponies’ identiy reveal at Benjamin Franklin High School

Binghamton Franchise History In 2023, the Rumble Ponies had a historic season, highlighted by an enthralling second- half run to reach the Eastern League Championship Series for the first time since 2014. Binghamton went 39-27 in the second half, and 18-5 over their final 23 games, to clinch a postseason spot for the first time since 2017. The Rumble Ponies then swept their Subway Series-rival, the Somerset Patriots (Yankees AA Affiliate), in the best-of-three Eastern League Division Series. In the series-clinching Game 2, RHP Dom Hamel was lights-out, allowing just three hits over seven and two thirds’ innings with eight strikeouts and only two walks.
The Rumble Ponies pitching staff was led by Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year Christian Scott, Hamel, and Blade Tidwell. On September 4, RHP Joander Suarez also threw the Despite falling to the Erie Seawolves in the ELCS, it was an incredible season that Rumble Ponies fans will always remember. On April 26, 2024 the Rumble Ponies announced an agreement to sell the team to Diamond Baseball Holdings
(DBH), a company that owns and operates 41 minor league teams across the country. The Rumble Ponies also announced that Richard Tylicki, a

long-time member of the Rumble Ponies front office who had served as acting General Manager since November 2023, would continue on as the team’s permanent GM. It was a year in which fans had great pride watching Scott make his MLB debut on May 4 at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays. In his Major League debut, Scott allowed just one run and five htis over six and two thirds’ frames.
Fans also witnessed Brandon Sproat’s dominance as he soared through the Mets system, en route to being named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year and Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Sproat was 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 11 starts with Binghamton. This was Sproat’s first season pitching professionally. As the Rumble Ponies head into their 33rd season, over 5.6 million fans have entered Mirabito Stadium to watch their beloved team that continues to be a fixture of the community. Former Rumble Ponies start- ing pitcher Christian Scott makes his MLB debut for the New York Mets on May 4, 2024 against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
