“It’s never a loss, it’s always a lesson”
While there haven’t been many low points to Sproat’s professional tenure so far, he has an interesting perspective on overcoming tough outings. “It’s never a loss it’s always a les- son”, Sproat said When I followed up on what the biggest lesson he has taken from this year, he said it’s “be where my feet are, it’s my first year in pro ball and it’s really flown by.” The lesson the rest of the Eastern League has learned, and all of baseball for that matter, is that Sproat is a force to be reckoned with. One who is resilient, mentally tough, talent- ed, and is just starting to make his mark.
Finishing Touches
Since this article was first published during the season in “Mets Magazine”, Sproat’s acco - lades have continued to accumulate. The 24-year-old finished his Binghamton tenure 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over 11 starts. He had a strikeout to walk ratio of 77-to-15, averaged 11.12 strikeouts per nine innings, with opponents hitting .181 against him over 62.1 innings pitched with the Rumble Ponies. This was Sproat’s first season pitching pro - fessionally.
Sproat’s last start with the Rumble Ponies before being pro- moted to Triple-A Syracuse was a historic one. On August 2 vs. New Hampshire, the 24-year-old struck out 11 consecutive batters to end his outing, surpassing the MLB record of 10. Sproat was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week following that performance. After the season, Sproat was named both the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year and Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Sproat enters this year as MLB Pipeline’s #1 overall prospect in the Mets system.
