Happy Retirements
Rado Nikic A farewell monring tea was held for Rado Nikic, Environmental Services Manager to celebrate Rado's retirement and honour his incredible contributions over the years. Rado was farewelled in style with many staff in attendance to commemorate the many years of service he has given to Ryde Hospital. We wish him all the very best in his well deserved retrirement.
Phillip Ho An afternoon tea was held in Denistone House to wish Phillip Ho all the best in his well-earned retirement. Phillip has been a Podiatrist at Ryde Hospital for over 28 years. After training in the UK and setting up the first wound based Podiatry services in Hong Kong, Phillip migrated to Sydney, where he worked across NSLHD and was instrumental in establishing the Podiatry service at Ryde. Phillip was recognised by his colleagues for his commitment to patient centred care as well as collaboration with his multidisciplinary teams. Staff organised a wonderful art gift of Phillip in front of Denistone House.

Quality & Safety Corner
Accreditation Results 2024 Thank you and congratulations to all Ryde Hospital staff on the successful accreditation assessment against the National Safety & Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, and the Clinical Care Standards and Advisories . The Assessors determined that all Standards were met, and no formal recommendations were issued. This is a very significant achievement and is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all staff. A draft report has been received, with a final report expected in early 2025. The final report will be made available to staff when received. The following are some statements from the draft Accreditation Assessment report. Ryde Hospital should be proud of its staff who are dedicated and committed and take pride in delivering passionate care despite the many challenges faced by the organisation through its redevelopment. Many examples of collaboration by the whole clinical team, patients, and families have been described and witnessed by the assessors. There is a strong culture of safety and quality across the Executive and staff of Ryde Hospital. Assessors visited all clinical areas at Ryde Hospital and observed communication between different staff members, and between staff and patients. Good processes were in place for undertaking clinical handovers, matching patients with procedures, recording information in the health record, communicating critical information, and providing discharge and transfer information. Patients interviewed across the hospital reported they felt adequately engaged in and informed about their care. Observation of multidisciplinary team meetings and bedside handovers demonstrated to assessors that patients and their carers are active partners in the care planning process. Staff from all professional groups and disciplines interviewed by the assessors were able to articulate how multidisciplinary care works across the organisation. Assessors attended safety huddles, handovers, and meetings where members of the multidisciplinary team worked collaboratively in the planning and delivery of comprehensive care. The Ryde Hospital Executive and staff should be pleased with the outcome of this assessment and now have a sound foundation from which to further develop its safety and quality initiatives in preparation for the move into the new Ryde Hospital during the next assessment cycle.
Message from Trevor Danos,NSLHD Board Chair
You all should be so very proud as this achievement reflects all Ryde Hospital staff’s hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence, and it serves as an example of what can be accomplished through teamwork and determination. I commend you and all Ryde Hospital staff on this exceptional outcome. Thank you again for ensuring that the hospital continues to deliver outstanding care to the community.

Nursing News
Ward Moves Congratulations to all involved in an extremely successful move this month of ward 3 to the newly refurbished Ward 6 on the ground floor of Building 9 (Trigg House). This all happened with the accreditation assessors there too. Later this month, ward 2 successfully moved into the Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre as the new Ward 5. The move was a smooth and professional operation.
Wards 2 and 3 has ceased operation as an inpatient unit and are permanently closed. Heather Gough, General Manager congratulated and thanked the NUMs and ward staff for what I know will have been a very hard time for making it go well for both wards.
Critical Care The temporary Critical Care Unit is taking shape. The Nursing Directorate recently did a site visit and were delighted with the new facility for Intensive Care and Coronary Care whilst the Hospital redevelopment takes place. Critical Care are expected to move into the new temporary unit in early 2025.

Ryde consumers attended the NSLHD annual Consumer Forum in the Auditorium, Level 5 of the Kolling Building, Royal North Shore Campus.
The forum provides an opportunity for NSLHD Consumer Advisors to reconnect and network, while also contributing to strategies and generating ideas to drive innovation and solutions within our health service. This year’s theme centred around artificial intelligence, health and digital literacy in healthcare. It also highlighted the Gathering of Kindness theme “Kindness is my superpower”. Jaine Carragher, Safety & Quality Manager and Diane McPhail (Chair of Ryde CPC) presented a poster on the achievements of the Ryde Consumer Participation Committee.

Joint Education Program
Improving Care After submitting a booking for an elective joint replacement, patients are now required to attend the Compulsory Joint Replacement Education Program (CJEP). This program is led by a dedicated multidisciplinary team and it covers pre-surgery preparation, post-surgery expectations, and offers patients the chance to ask questions of the nursing and Allied Health team. Since its re-launch in 2023, attendance has increased from under 20% to over 90%, with patients reporting significant benefits. This success is a testament to the hard work, collaboration, and commitment of the entire team. Thank you for your continued dedication and teamwork!

Chaplaincy Update
Time to Reflect At Ryde, we are a multi-faith community, and whether we share a faith tradition or not, we can all reflect this festive season. Christmas is traditionally a time of great joy and celebration of the wonders of the world.
It is also an invitation to live out our shared humanity, grounded in compassion, understanding, and at the service for others entrusted in our care at Ryde hospital. It is a time to forgive those who have wronged us, and act with kindness. As we transition from the close of 2024 into the new year, let us pause and reflect: What are we truly grateful for? What gives our lives joy and meaning? In today’s fast-paced world, where we are constantly bombarded with notifications, and news updates, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We all need to rest and to truly be present and ready for what lies ahead, we must allow ourselves moments of self-retrospect to reset our minds and hearts. True vigilance is not about constant motion, but about finding stillness and peace. As we close this year, let us not forget the world around us, but to become more fully present and engaged with it. At Ryde Hospital, we celebrate with gratitude this season of hope, peace, and healing. We thank our dedicated staff and management for their unwavering commitment to the well-being of all our patients. Your hard work and care make a profound difference in the lives of those who come through our doors, and for that, we are deeply thankful. We acknowledge those who make chaplaincy at Ryde hospital a reality, and extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the faith leaders and volunteer chaplains at Ryde Hospital for their unwavering dedication to providing chaplaincy services and pastoral care to our patients. Your compassionate support makes a significant difference in the lives of those in need. May this Christmas bring you peace, renewal, and the promise of new beginnings. Merry Christmas to all. This year will be the last Christmas for the Ryde Hospital chapel in its current locationwe look forawrd to our new multi-faith space to be built as part of the hospital redevelopment. Chaplaincy services are available over the festive season. For more information visit Ryde Chaplaincy. Hamper Donations
A special thank you also goes to Kingdomcity Church, 1 King Street, Concord West, for their generous delivery of Christmas hampers to our patients. Your kindness and thoughtfulness have brought joy and comfort to many this season. Thank you for your continued support and service.

Infection Prevention & Control
Importance of Patient Engagement The NSLHD Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) team emphasizes the importance of engaging patients, families, and caregivers in infection prevention strategies. Empowering patients as active partners in their healthcare can significantly enhance safety and outcomes. Evidence suggests that patient engagement is crucial for improving and sustaining patient safety. By providing patients and their families with comprehensive information about infection prevention, they can actively participate in their care, which has the potential to lead to better health outcomes. IPAC Resources Available The NSLHD IPAC team has developed a variety of resources aimed at educating patients and their families about infection prevention. These resources include:
Brochures (consumer approved)
•
o Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) in the Healthcare Setting
o Why are Infection Prevention and Control Precautions being used?
o Caring for your Cannula These brochures are accessible in multiple formats:
• Hard copies are available in every inpatient ward, including the Emergency Department.
• Soft copies can be accessed via QR code posters located throughout the facility.
• They are also included in the Ryde Hospital Welcome Pack.
• Additional resources are available on the NSLHD IPAC Intranet site, which includes information sheets on multi- resistant organisms (MROs) such as Clostridium Difficile and MRSA for enhancing awareness Clinical and non-clinical staff play a pivotal role in disseminating IPAC information, and we encourage you to actively share these resources with patients and their families. This not only raises awareness but also fosters an environment where patients feel empowered to ask questions and engage in discussions about their care. For more information go to IPAC Consumer Information. By equipping patients with knowledge and resources, the NSLHD aims to create a safer healthcare environment where everyone plays a part in reducing infection risks.
