Football, food, and family — what’s not to like about Thanksgiving? I find it an exceptionally cozy and mellow holiday since we usually stay home and celebrate with our little household unit. Nichole works hard to make us a nice dinner, and I do my part to help, then we hang out with a game on in the background and simply enjoy the food and each other’s company. OUR ANNUAL THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS
our kids grow up with an awareness of and appreciation for what they have. The team at Anthony’s Lawn Care and Landscaping is one of the things I’m most
thankful for, so I try to go the extra mile this time of year to stress how much I value them. For three years, the company bought every employee all of the ingredients they’d need for
a full Thanksgiving dinner, and each team member would walk out of the office with bags full of groceries. But the turkeys were subpar one year, so we looked for alternatives. After trying gift baskets, I hit upon a new idea that I call Pies for the Guys. Everyone gets to take home at least one pie, and, funnily enough, the team seems far more excited about it than they did the full meal. I think two bags full of food was a bit overwhelming or maybe
We still try to do something extra every year to mark that Thanksgiving isn’t just another day. I love decorating and like to make things fun for Andrew and the neighborhood
kids, so I always put giant inflatable turkeys on the lawn. We also go out of our way to treat dinner like a special occasion by deep- cleaning the house and putting out special table settings. We want an appropriate atmosphere as we each take turns sharing everything we’re grateful for. Nichole and I generally make a habit of thankfulness, and I keep a gratitude journal. We think it’s important to discuss with Andrew why we’re thankful throughout the year. But there is an extra emphasis and formality to these conversations at Thanksgiving. We don’t want to miss an opportunity to help
even created pressure to cook more. But premade pies are easy. They don’t require any work on your part, and everyone loves dessert.
In that same spirit of giving, Anthony’s Lawn Care and Landscaping also makes an annual donation to Feeding America. As grateful as we are for what we have, we don’t believe a hearty meal on Thanksgiving should be a luxury. If your family or business would like to join us with a contribution, visit FeedingAmerica.org.

Protect Your Tree Roots From Winter Expert Tips to Avoid Cold Weather Damage
Are you hosting Thanksgiving this year? Here’s an easy and affordable way to wow your guests: Turn a pumpkin into a centerpiece in just four steps! 1. Choose a vase. Look for one with a flared top and narrower base that can hold the ideal size of floral arrangement for your table.
2. Purchase a pumpkin. Make sure the pumpkin is roughly the same height as your vase or a little bit taller.
We assume trees are well-adapted to the outdoors and can survive without human
intervention. But countless trees suffer damage every winter, and you don’t want those on your lawn to be among them. Tree roots are particularly vulnerable during the cold season, but protective measures can keep them safe from unfavorable conditions.
3. Cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin and hollow out the inside. The hole should be big enough for the thickest part of our vase to fit through. After hollowing, drop the vase inside. Its rim should line up with the hole you carved. 4. Fill the vase with fall foliage. You can gather leafy branches, twigs, pine boughs, and pine cones outside or purchase fake ones! Stick to a fall color scheme of browns, reds, oranges, and yellows, or find items that match your table linens.
The work starts with proper mulching. Tree roots must stay below ground where they belong, but the “volcano” mulching method can bring them to the surface. Volcano mulching describes piling mulch directly against the tree trunk in a large, deep mound. Many homeowners also fail to remove the previous year’s mulch before applying a new layer in spring. As a result, the roots confuse the mulch for soil and begin growing upwards, exposing themselves to the elements. While improper mulching will likely damage your tree roots, proper mulching can protect them. We recommend “donut” mulching around your tree by creating an even layer that starts in a ring several inches from the trunk. The mulch will help insulate the ground so your tree roots stay within a safe temperature range, even during the worst cold snaps. Remember, your tree roots extend approximately as far as your longest branches, so your mulch ring may have to be large to offer adequate protection. Another option involves raking your leaves into a similar pattern around your trees rather than removing them from the lawn. We also recommend setting yourself up for success early in the year. Be careful when you plant new trees and shrubs, as plants with shallow roots are more susceptible to cold weather. Deep root fertilization in the spring can also create hardier roots that will withstand freezing temperatures in winter. Finally, ensure your trees are adequately hydrated before the year’s first frozen temperatures. Your roots will need that water to last them for several months! You should also be careful to keep road salt away from your trees. It could alter the structure of your soil and create a less hospitable climate for your tree roots. Anthony’s Lawn Care and Landscaping is here to help if you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed. Our expert team will gladly do the work for you and provide tips on keeping your trees healthy year-round. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Decorating your home is one of the most surefire ways to get into the holiday spirit, but it can also be a frustrating experience for the uninitiated. Before you start unraveling strands of lights, be sure you know the basics. Plan, plan, plan.
little extra, just in case. Have the right tools.
Not all lights are created equal. Be sure to never put interior lights on the outside of your home and vice versa. External-rated lights are brighter, but more importantly, they’re safer. Indoor-rated lights are not weather-resistant, so the cords could break down and pose a fire hazard. We also recommend using light timers for convenience and electricity savings. Don’t go it alone. Any project involving ladders can be dangerous. You’ll want at least one other person helping to steady the ladder and keep you safe. Plus, an extra pair of hands will be helpful. A partner can help you measure, hang, and troubleshoot more efficiently. We hope these tips help, but if you’re still not confident, Anthony’s Lawn Care and Landscaping will do the work for you. Our pros have ample experience hanging Christmas lights and can make your house shine! Cross an item off your holiday to- do list by calling us for a free estimate today.
Never start randomly hanging lights and hope it works out. Instead, begin with a vision of how you want your home to look and where you’d like the
lights to go. We recommend lighting up the outlines of your house — along the roofline and around doors and windows. Pathway lighting is also an excellent opportunity to add festivity while improving safety. Measure twice, hang once. Once you know where you want lights, ensure you have enough. You don’t want to run out of strands while you are at

Gutter Guards: What You Should Know Before Buying
It doesn’t take much for your home’s gutters to clog. Whether a rainstorm washes debris down your roof or tree foliage sprouts inside your gutters, you may find yourself cleaning them out regularly. If not, clogged drains can lead to a host of issues, including water damage, sagging gutters, and even flooding. Gutter guards come in different shapes and sizes, but the primary purpose of these tools is to catch the residue and grime that falls off your roof to keep your gutters unclogged and functional. While gutter guards seem like a simple solution, they can also be another headache. But the benefits might outweigh the hassle. Benefits to Consider It’s easy to see why homeowners should consider gutter guards. Your gutters must be blockage-free to stream water away from your home effectively. Yet, aside from keeping
your gutters unclogged, these helpful guards can also ensure:
gutters before re-freezing and causing a blockage. Guards can help ensure that water is constantly flowing away from your home. Some of the Drawbacks The main drawback to remember is that no gutter guard is a one-stop solution. They will in no way allow you to stop cleaning your gutters. Even with gutter guards, you must check and clean your gutters regularly. These guards won’t catch everything, and clogging can still occur with them in place. Cleaning your gutters with guards can also become more time-consuming than without them. While you will need to maintain and clean your gutter guards, they are still helpful in minimizing blockage

Fewer gutter cleanups: Spend less time unclogging your gutters since your gutter guards are catching most of the debris. Insect infestation prevention: Wet foliage and stagnant water can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other insects. When your gutters are clear, this won’t be a problem! Delay in gutter rusting or erosion: With less water blocked in your gutters, you can increase the lifespan and minimize the need to replace rusted or eroded gutters.
