WA Investment Prospectus (RDA)

Aviation Drones have become a mainstream technology with civilian capabilities that have prompted intervention by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, requiring specialised pilot certification and training programs. There is an opportunity to create a world-class WA DroneHub that has the capacity to develop cutting-edge drone innovation, as well as train unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pilots. There is an array of industries each with specific drone needs and given the wide open spaces in WA, it is clear that the State can be at the forefront of drone research and development. A WA DroneHub could meet industry needs, and set global benchmarks in UAV pilot training. A common user facility model is in the advanced stages of development to bring these functions together. It seeks to provide industry, government agencies and researchers cost-effective access to data, prototyping and testing infrastructure necessary to research, design and commercialise drone accessories that enhance the capacity to collect, store and share data. The facility will support applications to fixed wing and rotary drones of all sizes and capabilities. The facility will also provide networked data and expert support for in situ regional testing projects. Collective effort will reduce costs and accelerate learning. The DroneHub also proposes to host a commercial drone pilot training centre as well as a suite of non-commercial drone pilot training programs to improve safety and boost user experience as drones become increasing popular among recreational users.

WA’s diverse regional markets are the primary opportunity for these technologies during the development and commercialisation phase, including: • Mining; • Agriculture and forestry; • Oil and gas; • Power and utilities; • Geospatial and surveying; • Road and rail transportation; • Tourism; • Medical and emergency services; and • Security and defence. As technologies and support services mature and expertise builds, DroneHub is expected to have substantial export value. The drone sector is growing rapidly globally with niche applications and data sharing platforms multiplying in much the same way as smart phone and tablet applications. The market is set for rapid growth in coming years and WA is in a unique position to benefit.

A WA DroneHub could meet industry needs, and set global benchmarks in UAV pilot training.
