Food Hubs and Aquaculture
Aquaculture The Mid West Aquaculture Development Zone is located across an area of open water between Geraldton and the southern region of the Abrolhos Islands group. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) established the Mid West Aquaculture Development Zone as an ‘investment ready’ platform for marine-based ventures with reduced environmental approval times, lower costs and less red tape. A number of suitable locations within this Aquaculture Zone have been identified by DPIRD as suitable for aquaculture. 60 Government has also provided funding for the construction of the Geraldton Marine Finfish Nursery Facility at the Batavia Coast Maritime Institute, Geraldton. 61 Aquaculture ventures in prawn, rock oysters and live coral are in development. Geraldton, Denham and Exmouth have established marine operations capabilities, with Exmouth adjacent to large Pilbara Ports operations with general cargo facilities. This offers a ready export gateway to overseas markets. Aquaculture operations in the Mid West Gascoyne include: 62 • Following a successful trial of farming Yellowtail Kingfish in New South Wales, Huon Aquaculture have been allocated a permit to establish commercial Yellowtail Kingfish farming off the Abrolhos Islands.
