Astrotourism The following local governments across the Mid West have a deep knowledge of Dark Sky Tourism and are developing themselves as destinations for Astrotourism activities. Opportunities exist to work with them in the provision of camping/glamping sites, observation spaces and tours. • Shire of Three Springs • Shire of Carnamah Mid West Gascoyne is also home to international world-class space projects. These include: • The $1.3B SKA radio telescope being built in the Mid West will look back 13 billion years to discover how stars and black holes formed; • WA Space Centre near Mingenew is a base for NASA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Swedish Space Corp, China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General, Geoscience Australia, National Centre for Space Studies (France) and Australia’s Capricorn Space. The Western Australia Space Center (WASC) is operated and maintained by SSC’s Australia-based company SSC Space Australia Pty Ltd. The station is remotely controlled from the SSC Network Management Centers in Kiruna, Sweden and Horsham, PA USA. • Learmonth Solar Observatory is utilised by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the United States Air Force.
