Accommodation All local governments across the South West are experiencing a significant shortage of rental accommodation, suitable for workers moving to the region in response to rapid regional growth. The $270m hospital expansion at Bunbury Regional Hospital and St John of God will require 400 workers over the next five years while an expansion of 700 workers at the Talison Lithium mine in Greenbushes will require 700 workers drawn from Donnybrook to Manjimup. Agricultural sector businesses are experiencing difficulty housing workers during harvest season. This is driving redeployment of existing tourism beds (Caravan Parks, Hotels, Motels, private holiday lets) are being taken up by workers on a permanent basis. However, any loss of tourism beds presents its own difficulties and there are affordable housing shortages in hospitality. Modular housing estates operated under the Caravan and Camping Act are seen may present an option to mitigate against critical housing shortages, although some regional communities favour more traditional approaches particularly where job prospects are long term.
