The Joys of Business Air Travel by Al Duthie Over the course of the last 14 years I have probably averaged flying for work 35 weeks each year. This probably calcu- lates to something like 750,000 miles for air travel. I have had several minor inconveniences during that time, including delay and cancelation situations. This simply goes with the territory of today’s air travel. There are the factors of weather (especially winter), equipment malfunction, and of course the human factor. I figured that for fun I would rack my mem- ory for the top 3 worst situations that I have run-up against. These tested my patience, but obviously I survived just fine to laugh about and tell the stories. These are indeed 3 true stories that I have selected. If you speak with any frequent business traveler I’m sure he or she would have plenty of good stories to share, some I’m sure much worse than my top 3 worst. A wise man (my dad) once told me to always keep things in perspective because things can always be worse. So with business air travel safety always outweighs any inconvenience that is experienced. And patience during air travel is a necessity. Being in a rush does not do anything productive for the trip. When I have delays or cancelations I attempt to make the best of my time by being productive with reading, planning, or talking and learning something from others. Here are my top 3 worst business air travel stories: 1- Sitting on a plane for 90 minutes waiting for takeoff due to a me- chanic issue, which ultimately can’t be fixed, exiting with the other passengers to get off the plane to switch to another plane. Then this replacement plane has a mechanic issue as well so we sit for another 60 minutes. And at one time the pilot on this replacement plane had warned us that the prospects for fixing this 2nd mechanical situation did not look good! Thank goodness he was wrong! 2- Driving to Chicago-Midway Airport in a bad January winter storm and then finally arriving to discover that all flights that day to the East Coast were cancelled. I decided to turn around and drive back home to Rochelle, which took me 3 ½ hours instead of the usual 2 hours for my return trip. 3- On a return flight from the West Coast arriving at Chicago O’Hare Airport at midnight on a Friday night and discovering that my suitcase had been placed on the next incoming flight arriving about an hour later. I inquired about delivering my suitcase the next day and I was told that it could not be delivered until Monday morning to Rochelle. Since I had to leave Sunday morning to begin my next work week I waited it out. I did get my suitcase and was home by 3:30 AM Saturday morning. I’m certainly not looking for any sympathy here, especially since this travel is just part of my job. I thought I would share some reality of the road in regard to air travel though. Do prolonged air delays or cancelations cause me frustration? Yes, a little bit. Do I have any control over these situations? No, I do not at all. So, I try to be flexible and go with the flow. Again, as long as I end up safe, things could be a lot worse. Of course I have not even mentioned aspects of travel in regard to hotel stories, rental car stories, restaurant stories…perhaps another time.
