Though he acquires many pieces from friends and the occasional es- tate sale, James is also careful to remember his past through his furnish- ings. The liquor cabinet in the dining room was part of his childhood, first owned by his parents, then passed down to him.

His direct approach has paid off in spades. Numerous pieces through- out the apartment are castoffs from friends and family. The luxurious, wooden sleigh bed in the master bedroom is a perfect case in point. A good friend used the bed throughout college, and James not-so-dis- creetly expressed his desire to make it a part of his own collection one day.
