RECLAIMING AGENCY: Matrix Model

T he shadow of trauma extends far beyond the realm of the physical, often leaving lasting imprints on mental and emotional well-being. For men, navigating this territory can be particularly challenging, often complicated by societal expectations and internal struggles. BTTJ recognizes these unique hurdles and utilizes a multifaceted approach, incorporating the Matrix Model and motivational interviewing through telehealth, to empower men on their healing journey. The Matrix Model provides a framework for addressing substance use disorders, commonly co-occurring with trauma. It’s a structured program that incorporates group therapy, individual sessions, and psychoeducation to help men understand their triggers, develop coping mechanisms, and build a support system. Recognizing that many men may have utilized substances as a coping mechanism for unprocessed trauma, BTTJ offers this model through telehealth to increase access and flexibility. This allows men to receive vital support in the privacy and comfort of their homes, reducing the stigma associated with seeking help and removing barriers related to transportation or time constraints.

empowers men to confront the trauma that may have fueled their substance use and develop healthier coping strategies. The model’s focus on relapse prevention, relapse response, and building a support system equips men with the tools needed to navigate challenges and sustain long-term recovery. It emphasizes the importance of social support, encouraging participation in support groups and peer mentoring, elements that are crucial for maintaining momentum and fostering a sense of belonging. Motivational Interviewing (MI) forms the foundation of the therapeutic relationship at BTTJ. MI is a collaborative, goal- oriented approach that focuses on helping individuals identify their own reasons for change and build intrinsic motivation. This person-centered approach allows therapists to meet men where they are, acknowledging their ambivalence and empowering them to explore their values, goals, and aspirations. Through motivational interviewing techniques, BTTJ therapists help men examine their patterns of behavior, explore the consequences of their choices, and identify discrepancies between their current state and their desired future. MI is not about coercion or persuasion; it's about eliciting the client's own motivations for change. By exploring the client's values and creating a sense of autonomy, the treatment plan that is created is much more personalized and focused.

The Matrix Model isn't merely about abstinence; it's about fostering a life of purpose and well-being. It
