6 . Satan is “a liar from the beginning.” When he speaks, do not argue, for he al ways gets the best o f man in an argument Meet him with the Word of God. 7. We may never expect God’s protec- -tion unless we are in His will. Presump tion always leads to defeat. 8 . The devil frequently quotes Scrip ture, but always perverts it. 9. Man in the garden met a threefold temptation and was conquered. Christ in the wilderness met the same appeals and came out more than conqueror. Through His victory, we have victory. 10. The devil puts first what God puts last. Christians are not permitted to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” until after they have said, “Hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done.” When God and His interests are put first, He will supply our every need (cf. Lk. 12:29-34). * * * G o l d e n T e x t I l l u s t r a t io n A few years ago, a man went to Brigh ton searching for reminiscences of Freder ick Robertson, the great preacher. He went into a little shop and asked the shop keeper if he remembered anything about Robertson. The man said: “ Come here, sir.” He took him into a room back of the shop and showed him on the wall the portrait o f Frederick W. Robertson, say ing, “If I ever am tempted to do mean things in my business, I come into this room and look at the picture of Robert son, and I cannot do a mean thing. I cannot do it!” It is well for us to have a photographic likeness or a mental picture o f some face, the sight o f which will help us in tempting times and will keep us from doing un seemly things. It is better to have a pic ture o f the Christ hung on the walls of our mind, for by “looking unto Jesus” our lives will be transformed. —o— The Lord Getting Ready to Do His Work Luke 4:1-13 Memory Verse .—“Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God” (Lk. 4:12). Approach .—Last week we learned that John the Baptist had begun to tell the people about the Lord Jesus. This week we find that Jesus has grown up and is just about ready to begin His work. When you have
Satan wanted Jesus to think about Him self and to forget about all o f the people who were waiting for Him to come and help them. So first he said to Jesus, “ If you are the Son o f God, you can take one of these stones and turn it into bread,” but Jesus knew that He should never list en to Satan, and He knew a good way to answer him. He remembered a Bible verse which said, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word o f God.” He said this to Satan, and Satan had no more to say to Jesus about that. But Satan thought of another way to tempt Jesus, and still another way, but each timé Jesus answered him by saying a' verse from the Bible. Then Satan knew that he could not make Jesus sin, so he went away and left Him. God then knew that Jesus was ready to begin His great work. Unless we count, memory is apt to be very tricky and to snare us into strange for getfulness. Unless we count what we have given away, we are very apt to ex aggerate our bounty. We often think we have given when we have only listened to appeals; the mere audience has been mistaken for active beneficence. The 1 remedy for all this is occasionally to count our benevolences and see how we stand in a balance-sheet which we could present to the Lord Himself. And we must count our blessings. It is when our arithmetic fails in the task, and when counting God’s blessings is like telling the number o f the stars, that our souls bow low before the eternal good ness, and all murmuring dies away “ like cloud-spots in the dawn.” And we must also “number our days.” We are wasteful with them, and we throw them away as though they are ours in endless procession. And yet there are only seven days in a week! A day is of immeasurable preciousness, for what high accomplishment may it not witness? A day in health or in sickness, spent unto God and applied unto wisdom, will gather treasures more precious than rubies and gold. —J: H. Jowett. falling down yourself or dropping the package. Jesus had to be tried out too to show that He was strong enough to do His great work. Lesson.— So one day He went up into the mountains as He often did, to pray. This time He stayed many days—forty of them—thinking and praying. Then along came Satan, just when Jesus was feeling very much alone and very hungry and tired, and Satan tempted Him to do wrong.
