Nathan. —o — January 2— “ Thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there" (1 Ki. 17:4). God is never at a loss for a way of pro viding for His children. The brooks of water, the birds o f the air, the beasts of the field, the winds of heaven, the waves of the sea-r-all belong to Him, and are under His direct control. He has no trouble, therefore, in getting food to His children wherever they may be. Perhaps tlone of us ever had ravens carry to us our daily bread, but God sends it to us in other ways; and it is just as really He who sends it, whether railroad trains carry it across a continent, or ships bring it half around the globe, or birds bear it to our windows, or it come through the hands of loving friends. We know, too much for our good these modern days,—many of us. We are so wise about “ laws o f nature” that we can account for everything on scientific grounds, and have no need for God’s in terference anywhere. Consequently we forget, some of us, that God has anything to do with this world. What poor fools we are! What are nature’s laws but God’s established ways of doing things? If I sow wheat seeds on a little patch o f soil, and in a few months reap a harvest, and then, taking the wheat to the mill, get fine floor and have good bread on my table, had God nothing to do with sending it to me? Did not He provide it as really as when He sent the ravens to Elijah day by day, with food for him? — J. R. Miller. When some one needed encouragement, when some one needed to be roused or put upon his mettle, the call of the Jews was: “Be strong," or, as in the original tongue, “chazak.” They did not call out “achtung," like the Germans, neither “at tention," like the French, nor “ look out," like the Dutch. A man in Israel felt dif ferently from us, and therefore did not think o f being on guard, or of paying at tention, or o f giving heed, but o f the vital strength that was required . . . The art of making oneself able to meet the re quirement came up to the high level of this rule o f piety: “ Be, strong and he shall strengthen thine heart; yea, wait, I say, on the Lord” .„ . ..Scripture is an
