white to the harvest.” And how little they believe . . . that prayer will really provide “as many as he needeth” ! The command of Christ to ask the Lord of the harvest is the pledge that the prayer will be heard. The power has been given us in prayer to secure the servants for God’s work. The Lord o f the harvest will hear. Christ, who called us so specially to pray thus, will support our prayers that are offered in His name. Let us set apart time and give ourselves to this part o f our inter cessory work. It will lead us into the fel lowship of that, compassionate heart of His that led Him to call for our prayers. It will elevate us to the insight of our regal position, as those whose will counts for something with the great God in the advancement of His kingdom. It will make us feel how really we aré God’s fel low workers on earth, to whom a share in His work has in downright earnest been entrusted. — Andrew Murray. January 13— "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; there fore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live; that thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him; for he is thy life" (Deut. 30: 19, 20). All that’s wrong in the world goes straight back to man’s use of his freedom to choose as he chooses, and grows out of it . . . Every heartache and heart break, every bit o f suffering, every lone sick-room, every sodded grave, every broken life and home, every pain o f body and heart, every blasted hope, is the re sult, direct or indirect, or both, o f some body’s use o f his power to choose as he choosés. It is all heartbreaking to God, ever afresh heartbreaking. Yet God will not take back His greatest gift to man, the right o f full, free power to choose as he chooses to, nor interfere with its use. He woos, but leaves us free to choose. —S’. D. Gordon. — o — January 14—“ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn o f me; for I am meek and low ly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matt. 11:28-30). Here are the most comfortable words that ever fell on human ears. Here God speaks from the center to every point on the circumference o f a burdened world. Here in the tenderest tones—I wish we could catch them—the Lord Jesus gives the utmost certainty for the fulfillment o f His promise, “I will give you rest.” Master, how shall I bless Thy name, For love so great to me? For sweet enablings of Thy grace, So sovereign, yet so free— That taught me to obey Thy Word, And cast my care on Thee? How shall I praise Thee, Saviour dear, For this new life so sweet? For taking all the care I laid At Thy beloved feet, Keeping Thy hand upon my heart To still each anxious beat. — F. W. Ainley.
