A FATHER AND A FRIEND WHY I’LL ALWAYS MISS MY DAD JUNE 2023
Father’s Day is an opportunity to honor and thank the paternal figures in our lives, and it will be my first such celebration since my dad passed away on March 28. His death is still fresh and painful, but I try to remain focused on the many years of memories we have together. Let me tell you a little about Dean Arden Harvey. Dad owned a roofing and siding company in West Virginia for many years. Later, he bought a vast property in Virginia along with John Deere tractors, pigs, and chickens — his version of retirement. Dad loved doing farmwork and carried on until his COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) kept him away from labor. But despite his illness, he never lost his good nature or love for the Yankees.
spend the day watching the players practice, eating concession food, and getting sunburned.
Dad was always a little protective of me. He bought me diamond earrings when I was a teenager so he could be the first man to do so. Later, he watched me endure several bad relationships and told me how much he loved my now- husband when we started dating. As he began to get sick, he wanted to ensure he could attend my wedding and walk me down the aisle. We had a fall wedding because I love pumpkins, and Dad grew me a gourd for the occasion.
He couldn’t get around as much toward the end, but he still had his little routines, and I loved participating in them whenever I visited. He loved to watch “Family Feud” during dinner and would blurt out his own funny answers. At night, he’d pack a bowl full of cookies and ice cream and beeline to the couch. I’d join him and watch “Dateline” during my visits, and he’d conspiratorially tell me that he wasn’t eating ice cream with anyone else. Even when we were apart, I made sure to watch Yankees games so we were doing the same thing at the same time.
I didn’t meet my father until middle school, but we more than made up for lost time. He had three children older than me, and
since I was the baby in the family, he liked to call me Kid. Because he lived several states away, I didn’t get to see him all the time. But I loved to visit during summer vacation. I have one particularly fond memory of learning to drive on the dirt hill behind his house. I’d blast my music and go back and forth for hours. There wasn’t anything better than that. Later, Dad bought me my first car and drove it all the way down to me in Florida. His enthusiasm for the Yankees was infectious, and I became a fan in my 20s. He loved coming to Florida for spring training; we’d always attend together. Spring training is an entirely different ambiance than a regular game, and it’s such a chill, laid-back atmosphere. He’d show up hours early, and we’d
There’s so much more I could tell you about my dad — his quiet but dirty sense of humor, his love of animals, and the way he loved to observe people like a fly on the wall. I’ll always miss him, but I cherish the memories and traditions he left behind. I still watch “Family Feud” and Yankees games in his honor; sometimes, it almost feels like he’s there with me. —Jenica Ellenberger Crime Paralegal 1

state. Driving a golf cart on residential streets in Florida with a speed limit below 30 mph is legal. Still, in most municipalities, it is illegal to operate one after dark. However, some golf carts that go faster than 20 mph meet the requirements for registration as low speed vehicles (LSVs). LSVs are any vehicle with a top speed between 20 and 25 mph, and they are the category “street legal” golf carts fall into. To be street legal, an LSV must have windshields, seatbelts, headlights, and turn signals. They must also be registered with a license plate and driven only by those with a legal driver’s license. LSVs can drive on public roads with speed limits of up to 35 mph unless posted signs prohibit the vehicles. Those who operate LSVs must also follow all traffic rules, yielding when appropriate, stopping at stop signs, and using turn signals. Further, it is illegal to operate an LSV under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even when driven legally, golf carts pose risks to their occupants. Collisions are hazardous because riders have minimal protection compared to a car, especially in golf carts without seat belts. Golf carts are an increasingly popular mode of transportation in Florida, with many now registered as “street legal” vehicles. But confusion remains about where the law allows golf carts and what makes them fit to be on public roads. As a result, many are risking not only traffic violations but the safety of their fellow drivers. This problem has even ensnared public figures like former Tampa police chief Mary O’Connor. In December 2022, a police GOLF CART LAWS ARE CONFUSING Know the Rules Before You Get Behind the Wheel
officer pulled her and her husband over for driving a golf cart without a license plate. She ultimately resigned due to an attempt to use her position as police chief to avoid a ticket, not her illegal use of the golf cart. But the situation demonstrates that no one is immune to misinformation about golf cart use and its consequences. The legal definition of a golf cart requires its top speed not to exceed 20 mph. The owner does not need to register the golf cart with the

Local Brewing Company Palm Harbor has been a fixture of the area since opening its doors nine years ago. In late 2022, the bar and restaurant changed hands, and new owner Nicki Vogiatzis is excited to carry on the legacy. “It’s a staple of the community,” Nicki says. “We’re focusing on the heart of the restaurant: our scratch kitchen, customers, and staff.” Nicki has 20 years in the industry and a decade of experience running restaurants. She says that “the relationships I make with customers and staff” keep her passionate about this work after all these years. “I love the challenge of running such a big operation and making it better,” she explains. But her latest venture came with plenty already on offer. Local Brewing Company Palm Harbor, also known as LBC, is a ‘90s-themed gastropub that boasts 99 craft beers. All of them were made right in Florida, with many hyper-local options available. As for the food, the portion sizes are large, and everything is made from scratch. “Our burgers are fresh, and our chicken is never frozen,” Nicki emphasizes. There’s also much more to do than eat and drink. Entertainment is available every night of the week, with bingo, karaoke, trivia, and musical performances on the calendar. LBC is also the place to be during NFL season, with 65 TVs throughout the establishment. Meanwhile, customers can let loose on the “adult playground” outdoors, which includes cornhole, Jenga, ring toss, and miniature golf. While the “adult playground” is a perfect way for grown-ups to kick back and have fun, the bar and restaurant are family-oriented. Kids are welcome, and LBC even hosts kids’ birthday parties. Nicki wants to see entire families come together for a great time. For example, she notes that instead of a regular Mother’s Day brunch, the restaurant offered an event where moms could eat free, and children could play while they enjoyed their meal.
