MIND MASSAGE

EMBRACE THE CHAOS Sounds like an oxymoron, right? You might be wondering how embracing chaos can actually benefit you. Well, here are some reasons why: • Creativity: When you let go of control and embrace the chaos, your mind is free to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions. It allows you to see things from a different perspective and come up with new ideas. • Adaptability: Being comfortable with chaos fosters adaptability, teaching you to be more flexible and responsive to unexpected changes. This skill is incredibly valuable in many types of settings (both personal and professional).

Missed out on our webinars because life is too busy? As a VETgirl ELITE member, you can watch it on-demand whenever you want! Here are the top highlights you should have learned from some of the popular webinars this quarter!

VETGIRL’S LEADERSHIP WEBINAR ON AUGUST 20, 2024 LEADERSHIP LESSONS: TIPS FOR NEW LEADERS BY DR. LAURA PLETZ • Build Trust First: This is the crucial first step as you start your leadership journey. • Lead by Example: Your behavior and approach will set the tone for the team. • Communicate Effectively: Ensure you understand team and individual preferences and adapt accordingly. • Create a Culture of Feedback: This will ensure the team has a growth mindset and there is psychological safety for all. • Be Decisive: Trust your instincts but be sure to engage and inform the right people. • Mentorship: You need a mentor to support your leadership growth vs. technical skills. VETGIRL’S WELLNESS WEBINAR ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2024 SELF-CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH NO TIME BY LINDSEY CARNICK, LCSW, MSW, MA • Working in veterinary medicine and living in today's world, individual stressors we all experience contribute to chronic stress states. Practical and tactical mindfulness skills are essential to management of stress. • Implementing self-care skills in "microdoses" during the course of a day helps veterinary professionals with little spare time to manage stress by interrupting negative thinking spirals that perpetuate stress and resetting the flight/fight system. • Stressors are typically thoughts about the past or future. Progressive muscle relaxation techniques that can be completed in as little as 30-60 seconds and focusing on the present with sensory data (e.g., sights, sounds, smells, feels, and tastes) recenters the mind’s focus on the present, minimizing stress.

VETGIRL’S SMALL ANIMAL WEBINAR ON AUGUST 21, 2024 NO, IT'S NOT HEART FAILURE: A THORACIC RADIOGRAPHIC CASE SERIES BY DR. MARC SEITZ, DACVR, DABVP (CANINE AND FELINE) • Consider charging radiographs per study instead of per view. By charging per study, you may empower your doctors to more consistently order the complete 3-view study; a comprehensive set of images could improve diagnostic accuracy. • Diuretics before radiographs? No problem! Just be sure to NOTE it! Diuretics can quickly change blood vessel appearance on a radiograph, so letting the radiologist know about the diuretic (and the patient’s response!) can be a big help when interpreting the images. • In cases of pleural effusion, you’ll often see pleural fissure lines on VD views. However, on DV views, the fluid can obscure the heart’s borders, a process called cardiac effacement. • Ultrasound is fantastic for detecting even small amounts of pleural effusion that may go unnoticed on a radiograph. But remember the limitations of ultrasound when viewing lung parenchyma – it can only show surface lung pathology and cannot reveal deeper lung disease due to gas interference with the ultrasound beam. Combining the two modalities gives a more complete clinical picture than relying on one alone. • Why is left-sided heart failure seemingly over diagnosed? o There are natural breed variations in vertebral heart scores that can make some dogs seem to have an enlarged heart when they actually don’t. o Not all heart murmurs are caused by heart disease. o Older small breed dogs often have a stable, undiagnosed (occult) cardiac disease that doesn’t necessarily mean they have heart failure; they may actually be presenting for a lung condition and just coincidentally have stable heart disease. • On radiographs noncardiogenic pulmonary edema typically appears as a bilateral process in the caudal dorsal lung fields resulting from protein-rich fluid, different from the fluid seen in congestive heart failure. But keep an eye out – around 20% of NCPE cases can show up with only one-sided pulmonary edema.

DANCE BREAKS! Seriously, staying organized and motivated throughout the day can be monotonous. So why not some impromptu dancing? Whenever I’m feeling stuck or overwhelmed, I just put on some music and start shimmying. Not only does it boost your mood, but it gets your blood pumping and your creative juices flowing. Dance breaks are obviously a little easier when you’re working remotely, but hey…start to boogie in the office and maybe you’ll get some coworkers to join in and you can have your own dance off! I have dance parties almost every day, and my dogs love it! If you’re not into dancing, just staying hydrated and taking regular breaks can significantly impact your productivity and focus. Always keep a water bottle at your desk and schedule short breaks to step away from the screen. It’s not just about physical health; it's about giving your brain a moment to reset, which can lead to better concentration and efficiency.

While you are embracing chaos, don’t forget to

Staying organized can be tricky, but hopefully some of these ideas will help you to be better equipped to handle it.

LEVERAGE THE POWER OF TO DO LISTS

These are my best tool for saying organized. Use technology like OneNote, the Tasks feature in Gmail or Outlook, or even a montage of sticky notes. Whatever it takes - jot down your tasks, deadlines, and any additional notes to keep your thoughts in order. Color code them if you want! The satisfaction you can get by crossing off completed items, it’s like a mini victory dance!

And speaking of dancing…
