LESSON COMMENTARY {-Continued from Page 4 71] inch of the right side o f the paper. The curve of the “R” should be 1 inch'wide, making the opening 1 % inches deep. Color both the front and back- black. Open the “R” and color the center red from top to bottom. Color the center crossbar red out as far as the inside of the slanting legs. Tills makes a. red cross in the center.) LESSON: Who. can guess what this big black “R” stands for? I think I had better tell you that it may stand tor two words: either “REPENTANCE” or “RUIN.” , When Jesus was here on earth, He said, “Except ye repent, ye shall all like wise perish” (Lk. 13:5). If people do not repent, they will perish, . Some people think all that Is neces sary to be saved is to get rid of part Luke 14:1 And it came to pass, as he. went into the house of" one of the chief Fhari-’ sees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. 2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. 3 And Jesns answering: spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying:, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? 4 And they held their peace.* And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; 5 And answered them, saying, which of yon shall hare an ass or an ■ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? 6 And they could not answer him again to these things. 7 And he put forth a parable to those which were hidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying nnto them 3 When thou are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than thon he hidden pf him; rJ And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thon begin with shame to take the lowest room. 10 Bnt when thon. art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that hade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go np higher: then .shalt thon have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall he abased; and he that hnmbleth himself shall be exalted.
of their sins. We will cut some of the “R” away. [Cut half of the slanting leg off.) This is not sufficient. We will cut still more off. [Cut. the rest of the leg off where it meets the crossbar of the “R.” Then cut' through the circle just inside where the slanting leg be gan. and again where the top of the circle meets the upright. Open and find the cross. 1 Now we have a red cross, reminding us of the blood of Christ. We will see what we can do with the pieces we have cut off. [The pieces from the circle, reversed and put together, make an “ S,” and the four pieces from the righ t. leg make the letters “I” and “N.” Pin them on the wall, and spell “Sin.” ] The word “REPENTANCE” means to turn from sin and turn to Christ for salvation. 12 Then said he also>to him that hade him, When thon makest a dinner or a sup- peri call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neigh bors; lest they also* bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.. IS But when* thon makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And thon shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thon shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. GOLDEN TE XT : than meat, and the (Matt. 6:25). DEVOTIONAL BEAD ING : Is not the life more body than raiment?** Matt. 6:2o-34. Outline and Exposition I. T eaching the L egalists (1 -6 )' N A Sabbath day, Jesus attended a dinner party to which He had been invited. During the din ner, a man afflicted with dropsy ap peared, and the legalists watched to see what Jesus would do on this Sabbath day. In answer to their, thoughts (and this very reading of their unspoken, thoughts should have been a testimony for them had they been willing to re ceive it), Jesus asked, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day ?” To His question, they had no answer. If they had answered, they must either deny the plain truth or else agree with Jesus; the former they could not do; the latter they would hot do. Jesus healed the sick man before their eyes. No one could see Him working. He simply spoke and the work was done. But they knew that power had been exerted; again in thought they began to accuse Jesus. Then He asked whether any one of them would not rescue an ass or an ox on the Sabbath day. If an animal was worth saving on such a day, surely a human being was worth more than an , animal and (should be rescued from any affliction. To such reasoning -they had no reply. Legalism can have no answer. O
