God delights in joy; His desire for His peopfle is that they^should be trust ful and joyful—both for their own sakes and for His glory. God needs vigorous workers, and He pan have’ these only by bestowing on them a joy adequate to the greatness of the work. . . . It is joy then, not s o r r o w , that is our strength; and they that have done most for God, have been those who have had most joy in God.—Horatius Bonar, 15. Overloads “Not by might, nor by power, but by my s p i r i t , saith the Lord of hosts”- (Zech. 4:6). Is it not possible to attempt to carry more than the Lord intends, and to as sume responsibilities He has never laid upon us ? It is the overburden that kills and wears us out. God knows our car rying capacity and never lays on us more than we can hear; He adjusts the burden to the shoulder. How many over loaded Christians there are today, over loaded with so-called Christian work, business cares, family ahd social duties, until they have* been rendered unfit for true spiritual service |—W. What is Meekness? “Gentle, showing all meekness unto ail men” (T it 3:2). Nowadays the word “meek” may carry a suggestion of softness, and almost o f cowardly retreat. Under' the Glacier “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Tim, 2:3). W. Graham Scroggie notes that Hum- . boldt, the great naturalist and traveler, said the most wonderful thing he had ever seen was a primrose flourishing under the bosom of a glacier. “There would have been nothing wonderful in its blossoming in a garden, but under a glacier!” We are to “count it all joy” when we “fall into divers temptations.” For then we can know the joy of watch-' ing God do the impossible. —Sunday School Times. 12. “Afterward” “Nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness” (Heb. 12:11).
