Somerset Gives Back JOIN US FOR 3 COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS THIS QUARTER

At Somerset Family Physical Therapy, we first and foremost take pride in

on April 29 to cheer us on! If you are interested in sponsoring Shannon or me, please call our office for more information on how to do so. All proceeds go to the Franklin Food Bank. Every year, Somerset Family Physical Therapy takes part in Operation Shoebox, which benefits the men and women in our armed forces who are stationed overseas. It is the mission of Operation Shoebox to “meet the needs of every hero with dignity and appreciation.” We are honored to take part in this fundraiser every year. This event will take place from July 1 to August 15, during which time we will be gathering supplies. Follow us on Facebook or check out our website for more information as the event draws near. We care about our community, and it’s obvious that our patients care too. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the causes we support. Our community is better because of your kindness and consideration. I hope you all had a great Easter, and to all the mothers and fathers out there, enjoy the coming holidays. We look forward to seeing you soon.

providing quality care for our patients, but we also pride ourselves on our community involvement. Most of our patients know we love the community we work and live in, and we feel a responsibility to give back to those who have given us so much.

“We care about our community, and it’s obvious that our patients care too. “

This month, we want to invite you to participate in the Tour de Franklin and food drive for the Franklin Food Bank. The mission of the Franklin Food Bank is to “enhance the quality of life for the Franklin Township residents in need by providing food assistance in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.” Somerset Family Physical Therapy has supported this mission by holding a food drive of our own and participating in the Tour de Franklin bike race. From now until April 27, we will be accepting food donations to benefit the Franklin Food Bank. Currently, we are looking for donations in the form of peanut butter, jelly, pasta, canned sauce, canned beans, rice, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cereal, and canned tuna fish. As always, all donations will go toward helping the Franklin Food Bank achieve their mission. After our food drive ends, I will be participating in the 29th annual, 25-mile Tour de Franklin bike race for the seventh year in a row with my daughter, Shannon. Come out to Franklin High School

My PT Story “I injured my knee while running for a race and couldn’t do the things I normally would do. My workout was not as effective, because I had to stop every five minutes to rest. Even picking up my 10-month-old son was difficult at times. When I came to PT, they whipped me into shape using a simple exercise routine to get my knee back to where it was before. The friendly atmosphere made it easier to come every week. Kevin made it fun and a pleasure to get my range of motion back in my knee. I’m sad to leave. Thank you to everyone at SFPT. Love you for all your help!” –Anita F.

PHYSICAL THERAPY IS THE BEST COURSE

OF TREATMENT FOR NECK PAIN

Fortunately, the majority of neck pain cases do not require surgery and respond best to physical therapy.

your pain is limiting your daily activities. Then, your physical therapist will perform tests to find problems related to movement, muscle and joint tightness or stiffness, loss of sensation, and loss of reflexes. Your physical therapist will work with you to develop a specialized treatment plan. After you’ve given your neck the proper rest it needs, it will be treated with special strengthening and stretching exercises. These exercises are meant to reduce pain and other symptoms and improve posture, motion, flexibility, strength, and endurance. You will also receive an at-home program to continue the healing process outside of the clinic. Neck pain can be debilitating, but physical therapy can make a world of a difference. If you are experiencing neck pain, call us today at 732-356-5363 so we can get you on the road to recovery.

People suffering from neck pain may experience stiffness in the neck and

may describe the pain they feel as sharp, stabbing, dull, aching, throbbing, or tingling. Neck pain caused by irritated nerves may extend into the upper back, shoulder blades, shoulders, arms, or hands — a condition called radiculopathy. Based on your description of the pain, your physical therapist will determine the best course of treatment for your ailment. After performing a thorough examination and learning your health history, your physical therapist will ask you detailed questions about your injury. Be prepared to answer when and how the pain started, what type of discomfort you feel, and how

Neck pain, like back pain, is a very common issue. In fact, approximately 30 percent of the U.S. population deals with neck pain each year, whether it’s from sudden trauma like a fall or car accident, a sports injury, or from long-term spinal problems. People with neck pain often have difficulty performing activities such as working, driving, or anything that involves turning their heads.

Naturescapes

One-of-a-Kind

BIOLUMINESCENT PLANKTON IN JAMAICA Imagine looking out at the water as the sky gets dark and seeing it turn a bright, glowing blue. That’s the sight you might be treated to at Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica, where dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms in the water, lend their glow to the lagoon. These tiny organisms thrive in areas where salt water and fresh water meet, making the lagoon in springtime an ideal place to see them. Eco tip: To ensure this magical sight will remain for years to come, always go with a “pack it in, pack it out” mentality. Take all of your belongings with you when you leave and be respectful of the beautiful environment that is yours to enjoy. NORTHERN LIGHTS IN SCANDINAVIA One of the most elusive natural wonders, the aurora borealis, can only be seen on dark nights in the most northern parts of the world. That makes Sweden and its Scandinavian neighbors a great place to see the phenomenon. From December through April, you’ll have your best chance of seeing the northern lights. Sightings are dependent on solar activity, so it’s impossible to predict the exact timing and location, but they’re easier to see during the longer, darker nights of winter and early spring.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the

right place at the right time, you might see rare magical sights — baby turtles scuttling toward water, glowing lagoons, or a shimmering sky. But when and where do you need to be to catch

these natural wonders?

SEA TURTLES HATCHING IN HAWAII On Oahu’s North Shore, head to Turtle Beach, which gets its name from the many turtles that nest along its shores. During late spring and summer, the waves subside, allowing turtles to crawl onto the beach to lay their eggs. Baby turtles hatch at night and make their way to the water by the light of the moon. If you do head to the beach at night to see this spectacle, don’t use white light, as it can disrupt the turtles’ progress (that means no flash photography).

Eco tip: Look, but don’t touch! It’s illegal to touch a sea turtle in Hawaii.

Eco tip: Book your trip through a responsible travel company, such as those that practice a fair-trade policy.
