Labor Day may not get the attention that Christmas and Halloween do, but it’s always been one of my favorite holidays. I see it as a chance to have some fun before summer comes to an end. I also I appreciate it as a chance to celebrate the value of good, honest workers throughout the country. As a mechanic, I’d like to think I know a thing or two about hard work. Over the years, I’ve found that you can’t be overwhelmed by the size of the job.You just have to be diligent and tackle the task in front of you. I remember working on a ‘66 Chevy pickup. It was a mammoth project, one that required two years of consistent work.When I was in the weeds, it felt like I might never get out of them, but I kept plugging away. Once I made it out, I was very happy with the view.The first time firing up the engine was more than enough reward for all the hard work I put in. While the value of a job well-done never gets old, you have to be able to balance work and leisure time if you’d like to keep your sanity.This Labor Day weekend, I will be heading up to the mountains with my fiancé, Lily. We’re excited to unwind, ride the horses, and get away from it all for a few days.We haven’t had a chance to vacation this summer, so it will be an especially welcomed break. “Quality time working on household tasks is still quality time, but it’s not quite the same as taking a few days to enjoy each other’s company.” Labor and Leisure You Need to Have Both The reason we haven’t hopped up on waterskis even once this summer is because we recently bought a house. I’m super excited about it, but man is it a lot of work. If Dustin were to make an album about what I did this summer, he’d have call it “Movin’ & Remodelin.’”We packed
everything up from the old house, schlepped the boxes over, and unpacked everything. In the meantime, we worked on the old house, getting it into condition to sell. With the bulk of the moving done, we’re now turning our attention to projects at our new home.We’re on 20 acres, so it’s basically a matter of what to do first. I enjoy a good home-improvement project, so I’m overwhelmed by the possibilities. Just like at the shop, we’re going to have to take the project of transforming our new digs one step at a time. One thing is for certain:The horses are going to be well taken care of. But before we break ground on any new projects, it’s great to have a chance to spend time together with no projects or chores to complete. Quality time working on household tasks is still quality time, but it’s not quite the same as taking a few days to enjoy each other’s company. Labor Day comes at the perfect time of year.The weather is beautiful, and it always seems to come right when I need a little respite. I hope you have the chance to have some of your own this Labor Day weekend. After all, you work hard too, and you deserve the chance to rest for a weekend. -Nolan Brown

EXERCISE Part of the barking issue may be due to pent-up energy. According to the humane society,“A tired dog is a good dog and one who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration.” If you already take your pup on a morning walk, try adding in an evening walk.You could add it to your child’s chore list and help get out some of the kid’s pent-up energy, too. It may also be beneficial to practice obedience exercises and games that challenge your dog. DISCIPLINE To put a stop to the behavior, you’ll first need to change any of your behavior that’s reinforcing it. Any attention your dog gets when he’s barking — even yelling,“Rover, stop!” — teaches him to keep going, because you’re rewarding him with attention.Wait until your dog has stopped barking to give him any sort of attention, including looking at them.“To be successful with this method, you
must wait as long as it takes for him to stop barking,” advises the Humane Society.
AFFECTION Of course, your dog needs love and attention to thrive — a lack of it could contribute to barking behavior. Reinforce silence by giving your dog a treat and an encouraging pat when she demonstrates good behavior, like not barking. “Our pups want to work for our attention,” Cesar Millan reminds us.“Allowing her to do that and to see your happiness is, to your dog, the biggest reward of all.” To make your training program successful, consistency is key. Enlist the help of the whole family to stick to the principles.Together, you can foster a calm, peaceful home where you and your dog happily coexist.

The Chase Scene From ‘The French Connection’ The Wild Story Behind a Thrilling Moment
Stunts have been a fixture in Hollywood since the days of Buster Keaton. By the middle of the 20th century, when cars had become a central part of American culture, chases and stunts involving automobiles became a way for filmmakers to show their bravado and wow audiences. Perhaps no chase scene achieves this feat better than the one from William Friedkin’s 1971 classic, “The French Connection.” Getting that electric five minutes on film was no easy task. In fact, the shooting process was reckless, illegal, and lacking in common sense. The driver for this legendary sequence was Bill Hickman, who also drove the Dodge Charger in “Bullitt.” While the man behind the wheel was a professional, the streets were not set up for shooting. The production team didn’t obtain proper permits for filming, relying on NYPD officers to help clear the streets. So not only did Hickman have to perform a number of wild maneuvers, but he also had to do so without knowing who might cross the street at a given moment. Shockingly, the sudden crash in the
shooting technique was misguided. “Hickman drove at 90 mph for 26 blocks without stopping,” he said. “We had no permission. I would never do anything like that again. It’s a good scene, but it was foolish.” Thankfully, nobody was hurt in filming this classic car chase, but don’t try this one — or anything like it — at home.

Yo Ho Ho, Landlubbers! Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day Ahoy, matey! Wednesday, Sept. 19, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Brush up on your pirate vocabulary, grab your eye patch, get your puffy shirt dry cleaned, and bring a little seafaring fun to your office or classroom. The holiday began as an inside joke between pals John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995. For reasons not even understood by themselves, they began speaking like pirates while playing racquetball, saying things to each other like,“That be a fine cannonade” (“Nice shot, dude”) and “Now watch as I fire a broadside straight into your yardarm” (“But watch this”).They decided Talk Like a Pirate Day needed to become official, so they chose Sept. 19, which was Summers’ wife’s birthday (and the only date he could remember besides Christmas and the Super Bowl). In 2002, they pitched the idea to humor columnist Dave Barry, who promoted it in his syndicated column, and the concept quickly spread internationally. DID PIRATES REALLYTALK LIKETHAT? The “pirate-speak” popularized in movies and Disney attractions probably sounds nothing like real pirates did in centuries past.Today’s swashbuckling phrases delivered in a strong Southwest England accent can be traced back to Robert Newton’s 1950 portrayal of Long John Silver in the movie “Treasure Island.” Historically, English-speaking pirates probably sounded more like Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, the pirates of the Golden Age didn’t leave behind any YouTube videos to confirm this. LEARNTHE LINGO, LANDLUBBER Participating in Talk Like a Pirate Day is easy — you just need to know a few key phrases.“Ahoy, matey” means “Hello, friend!”“Blimey, that son of a biscuit-eater hornswaggled me out of me doubloons” means “Darn it, that jerk cheated me out of my money!”“Shiver me timbers, that old salt is three sheets to the wind” means “Wow, that old sailor has had too much beer.” And if a pirate (or your boss) says,“Swab the deck, ye bilge rat, or it’s Davy Jones’ locker for ye!” start mopping the floor immediately. THE HISTORY OFTHESE SWASHBUCKLING SHENANIGANS
INGREDIENTS • 8 slices of bread (Pullman works best) • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (preferably Parmigiano-Reggiano) 1. Butter each slice of bread on the outsides and sprinkle with Parmesan. 2. Layer ham and cheese evenly on top of 4 slices of bread. 3. Spread apricot preserves and mustard across the other 4 slices. Press sandwiches together. DIRECTIONS
• 8 ounces ham, thinly sliced • 1/2 pound Swiss cheese, sliced • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard • 1/4 cup apricot preserves
4. In a cast-iron skillet or large
sauté pan over medium heat, grill sandwiches until golden, about 3 minutes per side.
5. Cut in half and serve.
