DON’T LET SHOULDER, WRIST, OR ELBOW PAIN AFFECT YOU

You try to get through the day, but that nagging pain in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist just keeps grabbing your attention. It sure is hard to concentrate on work, your family, and other activities you need to do! It is common to fixate on the body part that hurts. It is often thought that because it hurts there, the problem is right there. However, this is typically not the case, as the cause of the problem is in another area. The body part that is painful is usually the one that is doing all the work, because other areas are not doing their job. Why it hurts The body is truly amazing and all the parts work together as one whole. However, when an area of your body becomes weak or stiff because of poor posture, stress, or injury, other areas strain from the overwork. A common word that is used for this type of repetitive injury strain is called “tendonitis.”

This is simply an inflammation of the tendons, which attach muscles to bones. The upper extremity works in 3 parts: the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. They rely on each other to make the incredible movements of your arm so you can reach, grasp, and do ordinary daily tasks we take for granted. Proper movement relies on you having proper posture. When you slouch, or sometimes do a repetitive task, like reaching across your desk, certain muscles can become too tight or strong while others become weak. This muscle imbalance leads to that area not working as well as it should. For example, you sit at a desk all day and slouch your shoulders. Now, your shoulder doesn’t work as well, but you still move your mouse around with your arm, which causes your wrist and forearmmuscles to overwork. As this happens over time, you start to notice aches and pains in your wrist and elbow. If

this goes on too long, it becomes severe and you need to seek out medical help. Solving the problem Typically a brace may be put on the area, but that does not solve the cause of the problem. The real reason may be because your shoulder was stiff and weak from slouching. An expert physical therapist has the right medical training to spot where your posture is not optimum and how you are compensating. With the right evaluation and treatment from the experts at Arrow Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, you can relieve your shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain quickly, and be back to doing what you like to do. Our home programs make it easy for you to maintain your gains and stay well for the long haul. Call us today to learn more how we can relieve your pain and get you back to enjoying your activities.

4 SimpleWays ToMake HydrationAHabit

Has Your Pain Come Back?

Many people are so busy that they barely have time to eat, let alone pause for a water break, and you may find that you often go hours and hours without quenching your thirst. But staying hydrated has real advantages, including helping you maintain your energy and focus. It’s important to give your drinking habits the attention they deserve. Here are some simple ways to stay hydrated this summer.

1. Feel free to call us and ask to speak to your therapist . 2. Your therapist can discuss with you why your pain is bothering you again and what you might do about it at home. 3. If further assessment is warranted, your therapist might recommend you come in for an appointment.

1. Always carry a water bottle. If you have a bottle within arms reach, it’s very likely that you’ll mindlessly sip from it throughout the day, without having to make a conscious effort. 2. When you’re feeling frazzled, grab a glass of cold water. Studies show that people instantly feel more alert after drinking H2O. 3. Sip on a mug of herbal tea every evening. If you make this a habit, you’ll add an extra cup of fluid to your body every single day. 4. Eat a diet rich in whole foods. By eating foods like vegetables, fruits, and yogurt, you’ll automatically up your fluid intake.

NAGGINGARM PAIN? IT COULD BE YOUR NECK!

You feel a nagging ache or even occasional sharp pains in your arm. You might even feel a little tingling in your fingers. You try to shake it out, but it just won’t go away. It might happen in the day, or even at night causing you to toss and turn. Did you over do it? Is it your shoulder? Well, it could actually be your neck! The nerves that supply the sensation and muscle function in your arm come from different areas of your neck. With poor posture, prolonged sitting, or stress, the muscles and joints in your neck become tighter, especially around the middle part of your neck. The nerves that exit your spine to your arms have to pass through holes between the neck bones called foramen. When these

nerves get irritated or squeezed, symptoms such as aches, pains, tingling, and even numbness can occur from the shoulder. Pain can even radiate down to the tips of your fingers. Sometimes, this is even confused for a common problem called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Catching the problem early If you start to experience these symptoms, it is important that you follow up right away with your physical therapist and doctor. Catching this problem early can prevent long term problems and injury. The good news is that most radiating pain into the shoulder, arm, and hand can be relieved with the right physical therapy. In fact, a recent study showed that 91% of patients who had radiating pain caused by the neck, experienced significant

relief after physical therapy. Our hands-on gentle therapy combined with strengthening makes a significant difference in the recovery from these types of symptoms. Our physical therapy experts at Arrow Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation work with you and your doctor to thoroughly evaluate your problem and determine where the root cause of your pain is coming from. Our physical therapists create the right treatment plan that will alleviate your pain and get you back to normal activities as fast as possible. We make you feel like yourself again so you can enjoy the activities you love. YOUR FLIP-FLOPS MAY BE MORE OF A “FLOP.”

Flip-flops have their purpose, but walking in them all day shouldn’t be one of them. They provide zero arch support, and they offer very little cushioning. Not to mention your exposed toes have no protection against sharp objects and dirt. Your ankles also have no support in flip flops. Avoid the pain: Unless you’re hanging out in a locker room, poolside or on the beach, don’t wear flip-flops and select a sturdier shoe. Flip-flops can throw off the entire alignment of your lower body, causing knee, back and hip problems. If you want to wear sandals in the summer months choose a sandal that has more contour and arch support. Treat the pain: OTC pain relievers may help, but now may be the time to get—or give yourself—a foot massage. Sit in a comfortable chair and gently rub lotion or oil into your toes, arch, and heel. For a deeper massage, press the knuckles of your hand into your foot, kneading it like bread dough. If you have back pain or knee pain after wearing flip-flops or other shoes that are bad for your body give us a call. We would be happy to pinpoint the cause of your knee, hip, or back pain and help relieve it naturally.
