Chess Years 4-6
Chamber Choir is open to all pupils in Years 5 and 6 who enjoy singing and wish to develop their voices with a more challenging repertoire. Pupils in Chamber Choir will need to commit to two rehearsals per week, after school on a Monday and before school on a Tuesday. The children will be encouraged to read from a vocal score and lead the singing in our masses as well as feature in the Years 5 and 6 Carol Service and the Senior Summer Concert.
Extra-curricular chess at St George’s Junior School follows International Master Mike Basman’s chess course which is used in over 70 schools throughout Surrey. Each session members have some tuition followed by a tournament match. As well as learning a game for life, Chess is very valuable educationally as it instils in young players a sense of self-confidence and self-worth and improves a child’s ability to think rationally. There will be two Y4 Chess Clubs running this term due to high demand (one at lunchtime). Please note children are only permitted to book for one of the clubs.
This Club is named after St Vincent de Paul. He was a priest who worked tirelessly helping others. The St Vincent de Paul Society encourages this link between schools and the local community. School groups mainly come from senior schools, so we are very proud of our past and present Junior School members. Our Club comprises of an enthusiastic group of children who visit St Augustine’s Care Home in Addlestone every Tuesday after school. The children travel by school transport to the home and will return to the Junior School for a 5pm collection. Our aim is simply to ‘spread a little happiness’ which is a line from a song we sing at the end of each visit. We achieve this by sharing news and chatting, singing, dancing, playing instruments, showing objects of interest, telling jokes, doing yo-yo tricks or sharing any other talent! Lifelong friendships are forged across the generations.
