Session 2 Preview the Text to Determine What it Will Teach and How
Reading Workshop at a Glance Minilesson 8–10 min.
Students learn to rev up their minds for reading by previewing a text asking, “What will this be about?” and “How will it go?” This helps students to anticipate the content and structure of a text. You’ll provide opportunities for students to practice using a read-aloud text, before trying the work in their own text sets. Because many nonfiction books have chapters or sections, it helps to preview those also, just as readers preview a whole text. Students practice previewing a section or chapter, thinking, “What will this be about?” and “How will it go?” before continuing to read. Readers continue to research their topics. Work time supports will help you circulate around the room, addressing predictable challenges with complex texts. Be sure students are spending the vast majority of their time reading. They might flag key pages they want to share or jot a few notes, but only after reading a chunk of text. Research groups meet in their treehouses. They place their concept maps in the center, share their new learning about their plant topics, and then add to or revise their concept maps.
Mid-Workshop Teaching 3 min.
Work Time 25–30 min.
Share 5–7 min.
