Session 4 Use Sketching and Writing to Take Notes
Reading Workshop at a Glance Minilesson 8–10 min.
Students will learn another way to hold onto important information they are learning. They can write about their reading in their reader’s notebooks. Specifically, students will learn that they can pause after reading a big chunk of text to sketch what they’ve learned, adding labels, arrows, and captions to hold onto more information. Students will learn that it’s important to read big chunks of text before pausing to take notes. That is, researchers pause when their minds are full and think, “What’s the most important information I have just read?” Students will continue to research, and you’ll set them up to read big chunks of the text before pausing to notetake. As you confer and lead small groups, you’ll encourage students to draw on all they’ve learned about research, not just note-taking. Students will use their notes to teach the other students in their research groups. They’ll draw on yester- day’s teaching to help them, continuing to use an explaining voice, topic words, gestures, and a teaching finger.
Mid-Workshop Teaching 3 min.
Work Time 25–30 min.
Share 5–7 min.
