MID-WORKSHOP TEACHING Read a Large Chunk, Then Pause to Take Notes “Botanists, eyes up here for a minute. I’ve got a quick—but super important—tip. When you’re taking notes, it’s important to read a big chunk of the text before you pause and take notes. You might read a whole section or a whole chapter or a bunch of pages that are about the same thing. Then, when your mind feels full, like you can’t remember any more information, you can pause and think, ‘What’s the most important information I just read?’ Then, you can take notes on that important information. “So right now, think, have you just read a whole bunch, and your mind feels full? If so, you’ll probably want to stop right now and take some notes, using everything you’ve learned to help you. Or, have you only read a tiny bit, and you feel like your brain could still hold more information? If that’s the case, keep reading until your brain feels full and then, take notes.” “Thumbs up if you’re ready to stop and take notes. Great! Thumbs up if you need to read more first. Fabulous. Keep at it!!” SHARE Use Your Notes As You Teach and Discuss Channel research groups to use their notes as they teach one another. “Botanists, in just a minute, you’ll meet with your research group. As you meet today, I want you to use your notes to teach each other. You might hold up your notes and use everything you learned yesterday about using an explaining voice, topic words, acting out, and a teaching finger to help you teach even more. “To get ready for this teaching, look over the notes you took today, and decide which part of your notes you most want to teach your research group about. Then, think about how
At the end of Unit 1, students selected a fiction series they wanted to read, and you set up systems so kids could read those books during their take- home reading time across Unit 2. Look for places where you can check in on students’ fiction reading or channel students who are reading the same series to talk.
you’ll teach, using the tips you learned yesterday.” After a minute, say, “Alright, Botanists. Time to teach!”
