WORK TIME Support Multilingual Learners with Asking and Answering Questions
PROVIDE A BANK OF QUESTION STEMS. “Here are some sentence starters that can help you think of questions about your topic.”
REHEARSE WITH A PARTNER FIRST, THEN WITH THE WHOLE GROUP. “Here are three steps you can follow to answer a question as a group. You can first jot down the question so every- one can see it. Then, you can talk about the question with partners, answering it together. Finally, you can talk about the question as a whole group. Give that a try with your next question.”
If students would benefit from higher levels of support, you could provide both a model of a complete question and a sentence starter. How do leaves help plants? How do _____? TEACH RESEARCH GROUPS TO OFFER WAIT TIME. “It’s helpful to have time to think on your own before you have to talk in a group. After you ask a question, you can give everyone 30 seconds or a minute to think of an answer before anyone starts to talk. You can even use a timer, like this one, to remind yourselves to leave some wait time. Give it a try right now.”
USE PICTURES TO ANCHOR ANSWERS. “Pictures can help everyone in your club to say more. When you think of a question, you can find a picture from a text that fits with that question. Display that picture for every- one to see. Then, as you answer the question, you can tap parts of the picture that connect. Studying a picture can help you say even more about your topic.”
