Rockland mother leads safari climb up Kilimanjaro
Tanzania | Sophie Rosa is taking the point on the latest fundraising climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. The Rockland mother is leading a group of parents and volunteers from the Roger’s House care facility on the Sky High for Rog- er’s House Kilimanjaro charity climb orga- nized through the Sens Foundation. Rosa is a former Roger’s House parent and she, in partnership with Angelo Garcia, an- other past Roger’s House parent, proposed the summit climb as a way to help raise money to support the Roger’s House project. The two met in January 2010 through the bereavement group program offered at the facility. Both were grieving parents. Rosa had lost her youngest son, Simon, in a drowning accident during a school outing, while Garcia’s son, Misha, died from brain cancer. Before they even met, the two had been thinking about doing a Kilimanjaro climb. Rosa was already in training for a future climb when her son’s accident occurred. Garcia and his son had both planned to take part in a Kilimanjaro climb together. In Mi- sha’s will, he left a request for his father to scatter his ashes on top of the mountain so that they could still, in spirit, climb the high- est peak on the African continent. Together, with eight other climbers, Rosa and Garcia are now in Tanzania’s Mount Kilimajaro National Park trekking up the mountain’s difficult slope. With luck, they should reach the peak before the end of October.

The club has been turned into a fundrais- er for Roger’s House to support the facility’s regional paediatric palliative care program. Roger’s House receives base funding from the provincial government for its programs but the facility depends on community sup- port through the Sens Foundation for cov- ering any shortfalls in operating expenses. This year the Sens Foundation will help with 25 per cent of the Roger’s House operating budget, along with providing extra fund- ing for capital needs, contributing to two endowment funds, and other project costs. All 10 members of the group, which in-
cludes other parents and volunteers from Roger’s House, have a stake in making a successful climb to the summit. Those who want to share their experience can follow their trek through the climbers blog at www.skyhighrh.com, or watch in real time on the slope of Kilimajaro through Tusker Tracker at http://bit.ly/Oqmc3O.
