Shock and surprise when McGuinty steps down

him to step back from the political limelight in Ontario and let some “new blood” take charge. «After 16 years as leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and after nine years as premier, it’s time for renewal, it’s time for the next Liberal premier,» McGuinty said. «It’s time for the next set of Liberal ideas to guide our province forward.» McGuinty, 57, was first elected to the On- tario legislature in 1990 and became Liberal leader six years later. In 2003, he became

the Ottawa-Orléans riding, said he under- stands the premier’s reasons for proroguing the legislature. “Nothing was getting done,” McNeely said. “I think the proroguing of the (provin- cial) parliament was the right thing to do.” McNeely also said he accepts McGuinty’s decision to step down as premier and as leader of the party. “For him, and for Ontario, and for the Lib- erals, it was the right thing to do,” said Mc- Neely, adding that McGuinty’s government had made great strides in health care and education and job creation for the province. “I think he’s leaving a good legacy.” “I support his decision,” said Crack, “from both a professional standpoint, and a per- sonal standpoint. A lot of difficult decisions have been made, but they were the right decisions for Ontario as a whole.” The premier’s decision to ask for prorogu- ing of the legislature has come under fire from the Opposition. But McGuinty argued that extended closure of the legislature is necessary for the government to work out an agreement with the public sector on the wage-freeze issue, and also provide time for both the government and Opposition parties to work out a way to make the leg- islature work more smoothly after the Lib- erals have named a new leader and a new premier.

TORONTO | Premier Dalton McGuinty sur- prised everyone Monday night when he announced during a special caucus meet- ing that he is stepping down as both the leader of the Ontario government and its provincial Liberal party. “It was a shocker for us,”said Phil McNeely,

Liberal MPP for Ottawa- Orléans, during a Tuesday phone interview. “There was a lot of specu- lation,” said Grant Crack, Liberal MPP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, regarding the topic of the special cau- cus session. McNeely said that the first part of the premier’s

premier of Ontario, and also the man who led the party to back-to-back major- ity governments. Third time was not the charm, though, as his last re-election victory saw him heading a minority government with the Liber- als just one seat ahead of the combined Opposition,

McGuinty has asked the president of the Ontario Liberal Party to call a leadership convention “at the earliest possible oppor- tunity” and also said he will stay on as pre- mier until a new leader is chosen. McNeely noted there are several strong potential contenders for the position but he has no favourites of his own. “I think it’s going to be a challenging lead- ership race,” he said. “I’m going to sit back, see who runs, and decide then who to sup- port.” Crack, who is one of several rookie MPPs following the last provincial election, ex- pressed excitement at the prospect of a leadership campaign. “As an MPP with one year under my belt,” he said, “it’s an exciting time.”

even after a pair of recent by-elections. The past year has seen the government struggle to get legislation passed, including a controversial two-year freeze on public sector wages, aimed at helping to elimi- nate deficit budgets and give the province a chance to start clearing its own debt. Mc- Neely, who has been a Liberal MPP for close to 15 years and was asked by McGuinty himself to step forward as a candidate for

announcement was that he had asked On- tario’s lieutenant-governor to prorogue the legislature. Then he told caucus members that he would be stepping down as both the premier and the head of the Liberal par- ty though he would continue to sit in the legislature as an Ottawa area MPP.
